Romania: useful information for Ukrainian refugees
Border crossing
Refugees drive into Romania from Ukraine through Porubne, Dyakove, Solotvyne and other checkpoints. You can also get to Romania through the checkpoints with Moldova: Kostesti-Stinka, Giurgiulesti-Galati, Lipcani-Redeuc-Prut. You can learn about the monitoring of queues at the border here. Each of these applications for refugee status will be processed under an accelerated procedure, but in full compliance with Romanian law.
A foreign biometric passport is enough to cross the border. If it is missing - you can use Ukrainian passport. Children under the age of 16 traveling with their parents must have a birth certificate. In addition, children have the right to cross the border with one parent (without the official permission of the other parent). If the child is traveling with acquaintances or relatives, you need a travel permit of one of the parents certified by a notary.
Housing and food
Romania accepts Ukrainian refugees without unnecessary formalities under a simplified procedure. Six refugee centers have been set up in the country. They are located in Timisoara, Maramures, Suceava, Giurgiu, Tulcea and Bucharest. The Romanian government accommodates mothers with children from Ukraine free of charge. Meals are provided free of charge until the situation is resolved. The decision taken by the European Union provides the right of citizens and residents of Ukraine to live, work, receive medical care, housing and education immediately for up to one year, without the need for lengthy asylum procedures, that was said by the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine. Initiatives for finding housing and opportunities

United for Ukraine is a website that provides information for Ukrainians and refugees arriving in Europe. Here you can find free housing, information on refugee support centers, contacts in countries bordering Ukraine and get legal assistance.
The Shelter for Ukraine service helps evacuated Ukrainians find temporary housing abroad.
Initiative “Dopomagai!” offers free temporary housing in safe cities of Ukraine or abroad. To find shelter, call 0 (800) 332 238 or fill out the form on the website.
The EU4UA platform brings together Ukrainian refugees and Europeans who are ready to provide them with free housing. You can find shelter by registering on the website using an email or Google account.
List of resources for finding housing from UkrHelp volunteers. Shelter options are offered in Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Spain, Germany, Poland, Moldova, Romania, Slovakia, Hungary, France, the Czech Republic and Cyprus. The list is constantly updated.

Volunteer help
On the RO Dopomoga platform, you can apply for legal assistance, information on entry into the country and ways to apply for refugee status.
The “Sylni Razom” volunteer initiative helps Ukrainian refugees receive asylum and basic assistance.
At the Refugees Romania aggregator, Romanian volunteers help find shelter, work, food and medicine.
Aid
Romania provides medical services to citizens of Ukraine who enter the territory of Romania, under the following conditions:
- Free medical care and care services similar to those provided to Romanian citizens for 90 days, if entry into Romania meets the legal requirements, respectively, on the basis of a biometric passport.
- Citizens of Ukraine who do not use the form of international protection, but have the right to legal residence, will receive the services mentioned above, with payment of medical contributions from income received at work, or from the date of their declaration of social security contributions.
- Primary care and treatment, emergency hospital care, as well as free medical care and treatment in cases of acute or chronic life-threatening diseases for asylum seekers in Romania.
- Free medical care and care services similar to those provided by Romanian citizens to Ukrainian citizens under international protection, who acquire the status of insured persons in the social health insurance system.
Employment
Citizens of Ukraine can get a job in Romania under the following conditions:
- If they are holders of a long-term work visa and have entered the territory of Romania on the basis of this visa, they may be employed on the basis of an individual employment contract concluded for a definite period, for a definite period, within 9 months of the calendar year without the need to obtain a work permit.
- After these 9 months, citizens of Ukraine wishing to stay in Romania can use the extension of the right to temporary residence for work subject to obtaining a work permit and an individual full-time employment contract registered in the general register of employees, which shows that the salary received is at least at the level of the minimum basic gross salary.
- Foreigners applying for international protection have the right to work under the same conditions as Romanian citizens, 3 months after the application and during the entire period of the asylum procedure.
The General Inspectorate of Immigration Regional Centers receives and processes asylum applications from Ukrainians seeking protection in Romania. Translators are constantly helping the government and Ukrainians, to ensure a smooth process at this time. Romanian employers and employment agencies are reformatting their work due to the influx of Ukrainian women who are forced to leave their homeland during the war. Women will be able to work in trade, services, logistics, e-commerce and the food industry.
