The land borders of Ukraine work as usual, even despite the state of martial law introduced in the country. Entry is allowed for both Ukrainians and foreigners.

The Administration of the Border Guard Service of Ukraine reports that in 2023 (between January 1, 2023 and August 1, 2023), more than 1.3 million foreigners visited the country, including 784 Japanese citizens.

Travel route from Japan to Ukraine

The most convenient and fastest way to get to Ukraine is to fly to one of the airports in Europe, which is located near the Ukrainian border, and from there continue the journey by train or bus.

Flight to the Ukrainian border


● Japan – Poland

Direct flights between Tokyo and Warsaw are operated four times a week on Friday, Saturday, Monday and Wednesday. Departure at 23:05, arrival in Warsaw at 05:45. Travel time is 14 hours 40 minutes. The price of the ticket is from 900 euros.


● Japan – Moldova

There is no direct flight from Tokyo to Chisinau. The travel route can be planned with two transfers in London and Warsaw. Departure from Tokyo at 01:00, journey duration 16-20 hours, depending on the length of layovers. The price of the ticket is from 1100 euros.


● Japan – Slovakia

You can also get to Bratislava from Tokyo only with a transfer, in particular in Rome, London or Brussels. Travel time is about 20-22 hours. Ticket price from 1050 euros.


● Japan – Hungary

You can fly to Budapest from the Japanese city of Nagoya, the travel route will include two transfers in Shanghai and Istanbul. Travel time is from 21 to 28 hours. Ticket price from 900 euros.


● Japan – Romania

There are no direct flights to Bucharest. You can get from Tokyo with two stops (in Shanghai and Istanbul). Departure at 17:10, journey duration 21-28 hours. Ticket price from 950 euros.


After arriving in one of the European cities, the trip to Ukraine can be continued by land transport - train or bus.


Railway connection Europe-Ukraine


Most of the tourists prefer the railway because of its speed and comfort. Ukraine is connected to European cities by the following trains:

● Poland - from Warsaw you can reach Kyiv, from Przemyśl - to Kyiv, Odesa and Zaporizhzhia, from Chelm - to Kyiv and Kharkiv.

● Hungary - there is a direct train from Budapest to Kyiv.

● Austria - a direct train goes from Vienna to Kyiv.

● Moldova - a direct train goes from Chisinau to Kyiv.

● Slovakia - from Kosice you can reach Chopa and Mukachevo.

By bus from Europe to Ukraine


A fairly convenient and economical way to get to Ukraine is by bus. There are no direct flights from Japan, but you can find a convenient route from European countries. The road to Lviv will take from 4 hours from Poland to 25 hours from the cities of France or Germany.
