Hungary To Hungary by car
Car rental in Hungary is a convenient option for traveling around cities and picturesque regions of the country, especially if you plan to visit several places in a short time.
Requirements for renters
Age: minimum 21 years old, but some international companies set the minimum age at 23–25 years old. For younger drivers (21–24 years old), there is often an additional “young driver” fee of approximately 3,000–5,000 HUF per day (≈ 8–13 USD).
- Experience: 1 year, although sometimes 2 years for more powerful or premium cars.
- License: national driver's license valid in the EU or international driver's license (IDP) together with a national license.
- Payment card: credit or debit card (with sufficient limit) for a security deposit. Cash is rarely accepted.
Popular companies
Both large international brands such as Hertz, Europcar, Sixt, Avis, and Budget operate in Hungary, as well as local operators that may offer more favorable prices and more flexible terms. Online aggregator services (such as Rentalcars or DiscoverCars) are also available in Budapest, where you can quickly compare offers.
Rental cost
- Economy class — 10,000–15,000 HUF/day (≈ 27–40 USD)
- Mid-range — 18,000–25,000 HUF/day (≈ 48–67 USD)
- Crossovers and minivans — from 30,000 HUF/day (≈ 80 USD)
Tip: renting in the city center or outside the airport is often 10–20% cheaper.
Additional costs
- Deposit: blocked on your card and ranges from 100,000 to 300,000 HUF (≈ 270–800 USD) depending on the car class.
- Insurance: CDW (Collision Damage Waiver) is included in the base price, but with a high deductible. You can purchase Super CDW or Full Insurance to reduce/eliminate the deductible.
- Vignette for toll roads: if you plan to drive on motorways, it is mandatory (approximately 6,400 HUF/week ≈ 17 USD). International companies often include it in the price.
Travel outside Hungary
Not all companies allow travel abroad. If possible, an additional fee and prior route approval are often required. Be sure to check the conditions for travel to neighboring countries.
Traffic rules
Hungary has strict traffic regulations. Headlights must be on at all times. The legal blood alcohol limit is 0.0‰, so even a glass of beer can result in a fine or loss of driving privileges.
Speed limits:
- in built-up areas — up to 50 km/h;
- outside built-up areas — up to 90 km/h;
- on motorways — up to 130 km/h.
Toll roads and vignettes
Most motorways in Hungary are toll roads. Payment is made via an electronic vignette (e-Matrica), which can be purchased online, at gas stations, or at terminals near the border. The cost depends on the type of car and the duration of validity (from 5,500 HUF ≈ 14 USD per week for a passenger car). Cameras automatically record violations, and the fine for not having a vignette can exceed 50,000 HUF (≈ 130 USD).
Parking
In most Hungarian cities, parking in central areas is paid. The cost depends on the zone:
- Zone I (historic center) — 500–600 HUF/hour (≈ 1.3–1.5 USD)
- Zone II (areas close to the center) — 350–450 HUF/hour (≈ 0.9–1.2 USD)
- Zone III and remote areas — 200–300 HUF/hour (≈ 0.5–0.8 USD)
Payment is made:
- Through parking meters (accept cash or bank cards)
- Through official mobile apps, such as National Mobile Parking
- In some cities — via SMS to the number indicated on the parking meter
Important: On weekdays, parking is usually paid from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., on Saturdays — from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. On Sundays and public holidays, parking is free in most areas, but not in all cities, so check the information signs.
Budapest has several large P+R car parks near metro and suburban train stations, where you can leave your car much cheaper (from 100–300 HUF/day ≈ 0.25–0.8 USD) and continue your journey by public transport.
Fines
Hungary has quite strict fines:
- Speeding:
- 15–25 km/h over the speed limit — from 30,000 HUF (≈ 80 USD)
- 25–35 km/h — from 45,000 HUF (≈ 120 USD)
- over 35 km/h — from 90,000 HUF (≈ 240 USD)
- significant excess (over 50 km/h) — up to 200,000 HUF (≈ 530 USD) and possible revocation of driving privileges
- Not wearing a seat belt — from 15,000 HUF (≈ 40 USD)
- Using a phone while driving without hands-free — from 10,000 HUF (≈ 27 USD)
- Improper parking — from 10,000 to 50,000 HUF (≈ 27–133 USD), depending on the location of the violation
- Driving under the influence — fine of 150,000 HUF (≈ 400 USD) and more severe penalties (including license suspension)
What to do in case of an accident
- Call the police at 112 if there are injuries or serious damage.
- For minor incidents, you can fill out a European accident statement form, but only with the consent of both parties.
- Be sure to take photos and a sketch of the scene for your insurance company.
Fuel
Most gas stations (MOL, Shell, OMV) offer 95/98 gasoline, diesel, and sometimes LPG. Prices in 2026:
- gasoline 95 — 615–630 HUF/l (≈ 1.55–1.60 USD);
- diesel — 620–640 HUF/l (≈ 1.60–1.65 USD).
