Military history, or an unconquered city
About this tour
Мілітарна історія, або нескорене місто
Please agree on dates and number of people before booking!
Did you know that from the beginning of its existence our city was a fortress? How many sieges did it withstand and which were the most numerous? How big was this fortress and how many lines of defense did it have? Why did it disappear from the cityscape, and is it possible to find its traces in the modern city?
Dates: every day
Duration: 3 hours
Tour program
We will discuss whether Lviv residents liked to fight and how and where "self-defense courses" were held. Why the city often maintained various military units that, instead of defending it, ate up its budget. How did the Swedes capture Lviv and why did they go so far? How we paid military contributions and how we saved money... through bribes. We will look for cannonballs from the 17th century, which, having never exploded, decorate the walls of the church today. Nearby we will find a shell from the Ukrainian-Polish war of 1919, because Lviv was unconquered not only in the Middle Ages but also in modern history. We will talk about the military event that led to the first raising of the yellow and blue flag on the town hall and the assassination attempt that the town hall lions remember. Let us recall the events of the German occupation and bow to the modern heroes...
In a word - about the war and peace on the banks of the Poltva.
