The year 2022 has certainly become one of the most difficult periods in the modern history of Ukraine. However, while the russian army is trying to destroy Ukrainian cities, Ukrainians are creating symbols of struggle, raising morale and simply joking, because humor is also a weapon.

Indomitability and steadfastness, courage and heroic resistance, love and respect were the unconditional symbols of 2022, which even today give us confidence in Victory. However, there were still a lot of interesting things. We tried to remember what symbols 2022 left for us.

Military equipment - "Bayraktar", "Javelin" and "HIMARS"

The strike drone "Bayraktar" of the Turkish company Baykar Makina and the American anti-tank missile system "Javelin" have been defending Ukraine from the invaders since the first day of the full-scale invasion. With the help of the bayraktar, many command posts of the russian troops were destroyed, equipment was damaged and great damage was caused to the enemy. Ukrainians create songs, memes, paint pictures, embroider them on shirts, and even name children and pets after Bayraktar and Javelin. The Ukrainians were so fascinated by the work of the bairaktar that, within the framework of the "People's bayraktars" collection, they collected funds for several drones, which are now actively helping our military.

HIMARS is an American reactive artillery system that truly changed the course of the war. In just a couple of weeks, the enemy lost dozens of BC warehouses and bases. The occupiers tremble at just one mention of this weapon, and the Ukrainians emphasize: "Remember, Rashists, Hymars is awake!"

Songs that became a symbol of war

"Oy u luzi chervona kalyna…" - the anthem of the Sich riflemen with the beginning of a full-scale invasion again became a symbol of indomitability. The song was given a new life by the leader of the Boombox band Andrii Khlyvniuk. Today, Ukrainians sing "Chervony Kaliny" on social networks, during services in churches, on tribunes and at children's parties.

"Stefania" - Kalush Orchestra - the song with which the band won the Eurovision Song Contest in 2022. For many, the track is associated with mother, home and Motherland.

Greetings "Good evening, we are from Ukraine"

A greeting that united millions of people and became known far beyond the borders of Ukraine. The popularity of the phrase was given by the Head of Mykolayiv OVA Vitaly Kim, who began each of his evening addresses with these words. Later, the track of the same name by PROBASS and HARDI, which, however, was released back in 2021, became wildly popular.

"Russian warship, go ***k yourself"

On the first day of the invasion, this very phrase was said by a Ukrainian border guard on Zmiiny Island to a russian ship, who suggested that the Ukrainian heroes not resist. And it was she who surely became the main symbol of resistance. It is interesting that the russian missile cruiser "Moskva" went like this, certainly not without the help of the Armed Forces.

Ghost of Kyiv

A brave pilot who became a legend from the first days of the war. The story of a hero who managed to shoot down dozens of enemy planes helped Ukrainians to hold on and feel protected. However, when rumors began to spread on the network that the "Ghost of Kyiv" had died, the Armed Forces of Ukraine revealed the secret. The pilot is a collective image of the pilots of the 40th tactical aviation brigade of the Air Force of Ukraine, who protected the sky over the capital in the spring.

Palianytsia

Ukrainian saboteur test. A kind of password, because russians simply cannot pronounce such a simple Ukrainian word.

Before the war, it was very rare to hear this word from an average Ukrainian, but today it is a real code word that is used very actively. The russian pronunciation "polyanitsa" has become the basis for many series of memes and jokes.

Dog Patron

The assistant and mascot of the Chernihiv pyrotechnicians, Jack Russell terrier Patron, who helps in demining the country, is a real star of social networks. Ukrainian children simply adore him. The patron is depicted on murals, paintings, children's drawings, and songs are written about it. The patron even received one world award — the "Golden Paw" award of the Kennel Club of Ireland.

A tractor and a can of tomatoes

A tractor pulling a russian tank and a can of tomatoes with which a hammer knocked down a drone are symbols of the people's struggle. Ukrainian agrarians, farmers, housewives - all of them stood up to defend the country with weapons that were just at hand.

Ukrposhta stamps

Throughout the war, "Ukrposhta" issued stamps with iconic events: the series "russian Warship", "Patron Dog", "Glory to the Armed Forces of Ukraine!" and other. Many Ukrainians were wanted in huge queues long before the sale of stamps began. Today, these stamps are a talisman and a very desirable gift.

"Rooster" on the closet in Borodyanka

A decorative figurine of a rooster produced by the Vasylkiv majolica factory, which miraculously survived the shelling of Borodyanka. The house was almost completely turned into ruins, only the kitchen cabinet and the ceramic rooster on it remained, which became a symbol of stability for Ukrainians.

"Azovstal"

The warehouse of the Azovstal metallurgical plant became the citadel of resistance to the occupiers. For many weeks, thousands of people hid in the basement of the industrial giant from round-the-clock russian attacks from the sky, sea and land. "Azovstal" is etched in the memory of Ukrainians as a place of strength and indomitability.

Slava Ukraine!

The national slogan, which has been a symbol of the fighters for Ukraine's independence for many years. It was used for the first time in December 1839 in the manuscript of Taras Shevchenko's poem "To Osnovyanenko". However, it was most widely used during the Ukrainian Revolution (1918-1921).

"Slava Ukraine! Glory to the heroes!" was widespread in the UPA and OUN. Of course, during the Soviet years it was strictly prohibited and revived again during the Euromaidan. Since 2018, military salute in the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the National Police.

Stepan Bandera

Stepan Bandera died 62 years ago, but even today, if Russians hear his name, they start going crazy with hatred. Propaganda uses the name of a Ukrainian political figure to intimidate, calls him a bloody criminal and a tool of the Nazis. For Ukrainians, Stepan Andriyovych is a symbol of the centuries-old struggle for independence and a national hero.

Every year on January 1, on Stepan Bandera's birthday, thousands of Ukrainians take part in commemorative marches and pay their respects to the man who devoted his whole life to the struggle against the Soviet authorities and sought only one thing - independence for Ukraine.

Fighting blackouts

The second half of 2022 was spent in the fight against terror, which the russian troops arranged for the objects of critical infrastructure of Ukraine. Thousands of people throughout Ukraine were left without electricity. However, the hum of generators became the sound of hope. After all, if the generators are working, there is light somewhere, you can drink coffee, charge phones, buy groceries.

Ukrainians say that even if the russian rockets turn off all the lights, we will turn on the generators and continue working for Victory.

In the second half of autumn, Ukrainians bought candles and flashlights for romantic and family evenings, tried to figure out the schedules from DTEK and understand why the lights are never turned off in the neighboring house. The network is filled with a lot of jokes, memes and videos about life in new realities. Ukrainians gladly shared with each other their experience in cooking and running a household.

The Ukrainian spirit cannot be broken! Only Victory is ahead!
