It has become known that more than 302 sponsors who had previously hosted Ukrainian refugees have ceased their participation in the programme aimed at helping refugees. Now hundreds of Ukrainian refugees in Britain may be left homeless. The reasons for this are described in the article.

More than 300 Ukrainian families left homeless: the reason

Since the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, Britain has issued more than 100,000 visas to Ukrainians and welcomed them to its shores. To be precise, 102,300 people from Ukraine were able to find refuge in the UK.

Last year, the Homes for Ukraine programme was launched to help Ukrainians who had to flee the war.

According to the programme's rules, Ukrainians could move to the UK if they had a sponsor willing to host them for at least six months.

However, it has recently become known that 302 families who used to live in the East Midlands region have been left homeless, as many sponsors are no longer able to take in refugees.

Local authorities in the UK responded quickly to this situation and have already begun looking for new sponsors.

It is noted that if new sponsors cannot be found quickly, the authorities are ready to provide Ukrainians with temporary housing and help refugees find new accommodation on their own.

Why sponsors refuse to provide housing for Ukrainians: explanation from the British

Thousands of Britons have decided to help Ukrainian refugees and opened their homes to them as part of the Homes for Ukraine programme. But over time, some sponsors became uncomfortable with hosting guests, so they decided to stop participating in the programme.

"This cannot go on forever. We realised that we needed our second bedroom, which is currently occupied by Ukrainians, because we want to host our grandchildren, who used to stay in this room. I truly believe that the time spent with the Ukrainians was wonderful. I will miss them," says Roger, a Briton who hosted a Ukrainian family last year.

Thousands of sponsors from the UK have shown themselves to be great and have hospitably opened their doors to Ukrainians in need. However, sponsors may have their own reasons for terminating their participation in the programme, so in this situation, local authorities promise to help refugees find new accommodation.

Just a reminder. Earlier, we talked about how to return to Ukraine from the UK and stop all payments if you entered under the Ukraine family scheme and Ukraine sponsorship scheme. You can learn more about the procedure here.
