On Monday, November 6, Polish carriers went on strike at the Ukrainian border, demanding the abolition of the "transport visa-free regime for Ukraine." Permission to blockade the checkpoints has been granted until January 3, 2024, meaning that one of the main arteries for the supply of aid, both humanitarian and military, may be blocked by the end of this year.

At the same time, since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, road transportation has become the basis of exports and imports for Ukraine, and therefore a strike on the border with Poland will be a significant blow to both logistics and the economy.

What is the current situation on the Polish border and which checkpoints are the best to plan a route from and to Ukraine now - we will tell you further in the article.

We have previously told you more about the current rules of entry to Ukraine and customs restrictions.

What are the queues at the Polish border today?

The State Border Guard Service of Ukraine reported that starting from 1 p.m. on November 6, truck traffic has been hampered at the three largest checkpoints: Yagodyn - Dorohusk, Krakivets - Korczowa, Rava-Ruska - Hrebenne. The traffic is blocked both to and from Ukraine.

At the same time, the State Border Guard Service notes that despite the strike, trucks carrying security and humanitarian goods, as well as those transporting animals, perishable food, etc. will be allowed to cross the border.

As for the rest of the trucks, "the organizers of the protest plan to let one truck through per hour," the SBGS said.

What do Polish carriers demand?

Polish carriers demand the return of the permit system for Ukrainian carriers. They emphasize that the level of permits should be the same as before the full-scale invasion, namely, no more than 200,000 permits per year.

In addition, they demand the creation of a separate electronic queue for Polish carriers, access to the "Shliakh" system, and a ban on issuing Polish licenses to carriers with non-EU capital.

Is it possible to cross the Polish border now?

According to the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine, Polish carriers do not intend to block the movement of buses and cars, but queues may still be longer than usual.

In order to avoid standing for hours at the checkpoints and cross the border quickly, we recommend checking the queues in advance and planning a route through the least busy checkpoint. This applies to both directions, both entering and leaving Ukraine. For instructions on how to check the status of queues at Ukrainian borders, follow this link.

About the documents required for a car to travel abroad read here.

A guaranteed way to avoid queues at the border is to use railroad connections. Ukraine is currently connected by rail to Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Moldova, Austria, and the Czech Republic.

We remind you! In early winter 2023, the rules for importing humanitarian aid to Ukraine will change. Read why volunteers oppose the new rules, how it will complicate the import of aid, and how the authorities justify the need for innovations in our previous article.
