Temporary protection for Ukrainians in the Czech Republic extended until 2025

The draft law Lex Ukrajina XI, adopted by the Czech Parliament, is now being sent to the Senate and awaits the President's signature.

Interior Minister Vit Rakusan emphasized that the main purpose of the amendments is to create a mechanism to extend temporary protection until the end of March 2025, which is in line with the European decision.

According to the new provisions, Ukrainians will retain the right to access state health insurance, education and the labor market.

How can Ukrainians extend their temporary protection status in the Czech Republic?

The procedure for extending the status will be similar to the one that was in effect this year: until March 15, 2024, individuals will need to register online and make an appointment to visit the Ministry of the Interior to receive a visa sticker confirming temporary protection.

However, it is important to note that the amendments to the law provide for a reduction in the period of free accommodation from 150 to 90 days for all categories of refugees, including vulnerable groups. These new rules will come into force in September 2024.

According to the amendments, refugees will be provided with a new residence certificate with the official signature of the owner or landlord. The new version of the law also eliminates the possibility of temporary protection for those who are subject to deportation.

It also provides that the government will be able to establish rules for financial assistance for voluntary return home.

In the near future, a working group is planned to be set up to work on the "transitional" Lex Ukrajina law and resolve the status of persons with temporary protection after March 2025.

We remind you! From the beginning of 2024, the Czech authorities are considering increasing the payment for Ukrainian refugees. Find out more about how much they will pay.
