Starting in 2024, Poland will change the rules on benefits and payments for Ukrainian refugees, as well as the terms of temporary protection. Read more about the innovations below.

Temporary protection in Poland in 2024

Temporary protection for refugees from Ukraine in Poland will be valid only until March 4, 2024. So far, the Polish government has not made any announcements about extending the special status for Ukrainians until 2025, but it is expected that the relevant decision will be made in the next two months.

Currently, the same rules apply to refugees as in 2023. Namely, Ukrainians are entitled to:

- free housing for 120 days under the 40+ program;

- free housing for vulnerable categories; large families, people with disabilities, pensioners, pregnant women and mothers with babies;

- official employment (subject to the issuance of PESEL UKR within 30 days of arrival in Poland);

- free healthcare and education;

- receiving a monthly payment for each minor child.

Cancellation of benefits and payments for Ukrainians in Poland in 2024

Currently, no final decision has been made on the abolition of benefits and payments for refugees from Ukraine in Poland, but according to the Polish government spokesman Piotr Mueller, the previously adopted provisions may lose their validity with the onset of the new year.

In addition, the stage when Ukrainians are fleeing the war en masse has already passed, and therefore Poland hopes that there will be no need to provide financial assistance to refugees.

Increase in child benefits in Poland from January 2024

Starting from January 1, 2024, the monthly allowance for minor children in Poland will be increased. Previously, Ukrainians could receive PLN 500 per month for each minor child, but now the amount of social assistance will be PLN 800.

At the same time, those who have already received the relevant payments do not need to submit any additional documents to receive assistance, the new amount will be accrued automatically. And refugees planning to receive it for the first time will need to provide documents confirming their legal stay in Poland and raising minor children.

At the same time, starting from February 1, 2024, Poland will start accepting applications for childcare allowance for the period from June 1, 2024 to May 31, 2025.
