Poland is actively repairing and developing transportation routes in the country. And to compensate for the costs and maintenance, some roads are subject to tolls. Currently, out of more than 2000 km of high-speed highways and autobahns, toll roads account for a small percentage, but drivers should definitely know where these sections are located and how to pay for the toll.

What are the signs of toll roads in Poland?

Tolls are provided for on highways, but not all of them. Currently, toll roads are located on the A1, A2, A4 highways. The beginning of a toll road is marked with a special sign.

How do I pay for a toll road in Poland and how much does it cost?

Tolls are paid at special checkpoints at the entrance or exit of the toll road section. It can be either an automated payment system or special "cash desks" with employees. In addition, you can pay for the toll using your own smartphone, for example, through the Autopay (iOS / Android), mPay (iOS / Android) application, etc.

Upon entering a toll road, the driver will receive a special ticket, which must be kept until the end of the trip, because if it is lost, the full fare will be paid, regardless of the actual mileage.

Please note! To travel on the sections maintained by the state (GDDKiA), you need to have an electronic ticket - e-Toll Pl Bilet. This applies to all types of vehicles. You can buy it here. At the same time, the Polish authorities are negotiating with private companies to introduce electronic tickets on all toll roads in the country.

The price of travel can vary from 0.10 to 0.56 zlotys per kilometer. However, the final cost of traveling on these sections will depend on the distance you have traveled and the type of vehicle you are using. On some roads, there are tolls only for trucks.

Where are the toll roads in Poland?

Highway A1 (Gdansk - Toruń)

On this highway, the section between Rusocin and Nowa Wiesz is tolled (its length is 152 km). The toll is PLN 0.20/km, the cost of traveling the entire section is PLN 29.90 (about 7 euros). Payment is made at the end of the trip at the gate or via the app. However, during the holiday season, the fare may be more expensive.

Starting from September 4, 2023, motorcycles and cars weighing up to 3.5 tons are free of charge on the A1 motorway. However, during the holiday season, the toll may be more expensive.

Motorway A2 (Świecie - Konin)

The length of the toll road is 255 km, but there are several free sections along the route. The tolls on different parts of the road vary significantly: from PLN 0.20 to PLN 0.62 per km. At the same time, on the section from Nowy Tomyszl to Konin (the most expensive section), motorcyclists pay 50% of the fare, unlike other cars. The toll is paid at the gate.

Previously, there was another toll section on the A2 highway between Konin and Stryków, but now the fee for motorcycles and cars weighing up to 3.5 tons has been canceled (from July 1, 2023). For trucks, payment is made via e-Toll Pl Bilet.

A4 highway (Kraków - Katowice)

The 61 km long toll road section is divided into several parts, as there are five intermediate junctions on the road. The toll is paid via e-Toll Pl Bilet or apps, or you can also pay at the gate, but keep in mind that in this case the payment will be made in two installments (upon entry and then upon exit). There are different tolls for cars and motorcycles.

From July 1, 2023, the Wrocław-Gliwice section of the A4 highway will be tolled only for trucks. Tolls for motorcycles and cars weighing up to 3.5 tons have been canceled. Payment is made via e-Toll Pl Bilet.

Please note! To travel freely in Poland and 48 other countries by car, the driver must have a Green Card insurance policy. The absence or delay of insurance is fraught not only with fines that are several dozen times higher than the cost of the insurance policy for a year, but also with the seizure of the car and deportation from the country with a subsequent ban on entry. You can take out insurance for the required period on our website. Read more about the amount of fines in Europe for not having a Green Card here.

Do not neglect your own safety and finances and apply for a Green Card at an affordable price in just a few minutes.

We remind you! Ignorance of the traffic rules of Poland can lead to serious consequences for the Ukrainian wallet. In some cases, it can even lead to the deprivation of a driver's license. Read our previous article to find out why you can be deprived of your driving license in Poland.
