Polish farmers are planning to block checkpoints on the border with Ukraine on February 20, RMF FM reports, citing a statement by the Solidarity trade union.

Blockade of the Ukrainian-Polish border: what farmers are planning

The union aims to block not only border crossings, but also junctions and entrances to transshipment railroad stations and seaports.

"As part of the 30-day general strike of farmers, we announce that all protest actions will be focused on a complete blockade of all border crossings between Poland and Ukraine and protests on the ground," the statement said.

The farmers claim that their actions are aimed at ensuring Poland's food security, as they believe that the lack of regulation could threaten the profitability of agriculture and other industries.

As you know, over the past three months, the border crossing points between Poland and Ukraine have been open for only 25 days.

How much money did Ukrainian exports and imports lose due to the border blockade?

According to the National Bank of Ukraine, strikes on Ukraine's western borders since the fall of 2023 have led to a decrease in foreign trade. This is evidenced by the Inflation Report of the NBU for January 2024.

However, the rapid reorientation of goods to other destinations helped reduce losses.

The NBU estimates direct losses for exports at $160 million and for imports at $500 million in November 2023.

"However, the fairly rapid reorientation of trade flows to other modes of transport and routes, in particular the sea corridor, made it possible to completely offset the losses for exports and partially for imports," the review says.

Polish protesters announced the end of the border blockade in mid-January. The report notes that this will reduce import losses in January to $150-200 million.

Some restrictions are expected to continue in February-March, but then end. The projected import losses for this period will be $100 million per month.

Remember! To travel abroad by car, the driver must take out a Green Card insurance policy. This car insurance is mandatory in 50 countries, including the EU. If the driver does not have an insurance policy, he or she will have to compensate for all damages (to the car, driver and passengers) at his or her own expense. At the same time, he will additionally be fined for not having insurance for the vehicle, the amount of which depends on the period of insurance expiration. In some cases, the police may seize the vehicle and deport the driver with a subsequent entry ban.

You can apply for a Green Card quickly and easily here. There is a special offer on the website: when you take out a car insurance policy for traveling abroad for a period of 1 month or more, you will receive fuel as a gift, or for a period of 6 months or more - + 15 days of the policy as a gift.

We remind you! Checkpoints on the state border of Ukraine continue to be blocked by Poland and Hungary. Find out what the queues at the borders are now and which checkpoints are better to go through in our article.
