Portugal has taken a step in support of Ukrainian refugees by announcing the extension of temporary protection. This decision is part of the country's response to the ongoing humanitarian crisis caused by the war. Learn more about the new terms of legal stay in the country

The Portuguese government has extended the temporary protection for Ukrainian citizens until the end of this year, according to a decision adopted on February 22.


In previous periods, Portugal has extended the period of protection for Ukrainians for a six-month period, according to observador.pt.


Portuguese authorities extend temporary protection for Ukrainians: new terms


This time, it was decided to extend the validity of documents granting temporary protection to Ukrainian refugees until the end of 2024. Thus, residence permits will be extended for 10 months instead of the usual six.


For the first time, temporary protection for Ukrainian refugees in Portugal was granted automatically and was valid for a year. Then, the government extended this status in March and September 2023.

How many Ukrainian refugees have found refuge in Portugal?


According to information from the Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum, by January 2023, 59,532 temporary protection permits had been issued in Portugal to persons from Ukraine. However, 1,566 of this number applied for the revocation of their protection.


According to the latest data from Eurostat, there are 58,800 Ukrainian refugees under temporary protection in Portugal.
