Before leaving Ukraine, many travellers have wondered how much money they can take abroad. Here are the rules set by the National Bank of Ukraine.

According to the rules, one person can take out up to EUR 10,000 in currency equivalent from Ukraine without declaring it. Anything equal to or greater than €10,000 must be declared.

What if the amount of currency exceeds €10,000?

Pursuant to Article 18 of the National Bank of Ukraine's Regulation on Protection Measures and Procedures for Certain Transactions in Foreign Currency, the rules for individuals resident in Ukraine regarding the export or transfer of funds or foreign currency abroad are as follows:

If you, as a resident of Ukraine, want to export or transfer abroad an amount exceeding EUR 10,000, you must present documents confirming that you withdrew this money from your bank account.

If you have exchanged this cash for foreign currency, you will need a receipt for this currency exchange transaction. These documents are only required for amounts exceeding the equivalent of 10,000 euros per day of export or transfer.

At the same time, please note that documents confirming cash withdrawals from their own bank accounts by resident individuals for the purpose of exporting it are valid for 90 days from the date of withdrawal.

In addition, to export an amount exceeding EUR 10,000, a written confirmation of its declaration must be provided.

How much currency can be transported across the EU border?

According to EU rules, persons transporting cash worth EUR 10,000 or more must declare this cash through the competent authorities of the state.

It should be noted that the obligation to declare cash is deemed to be not fulfilled if the information provided is incorrect or incomplete, or if the cash is not submitted for control.

At the same time, any individual may carry cash without any age restrictions. At the same time, a person under 18 years of age who carries money must carry it personally, i.e. with him or her in his or her luggage! If the accompanying person, and not the child, has such funds, and the amount of funds held by the accompanying person exceeds EUR 10,000, then such person is obliged to declare the said funds.

It is worth noting that when travelling abroad, citizens should also take care of their health. An insurance policy will always help you in this matter, as it can minimise costs and save your money in the event of an unforeseen emergency.

When planning a trip to Ukraine, we recommend that you take out not just health insurance, but insurance covering military risks, which will cover standard medical care/treatment/diagnosis, etc., as well as injuries and accidents related to passive and direct military risks. Such insurance will allow you to be as protected as possible from any unforeseen situations. You can apply for an insurance policy covering military risks on our portal by following this link.
