In April 2022, more than 26,000 EU citizens over the age of 15 were interviewed by computer interview on Ukraine’s accession to the European Union. According to the Eurobarometer poll, most EU citizens see Ukraine as part of the European family and are ready to support our state. 66% of EU citizens agree that "Ukraine should join the EU when it is ready", and 71% believe that Ukraine is part of the European family.

When asked on Ukraine's accession to the EU when it is ready, the largest support ("fully support") was shown by Lithuania - 58%, the least - Hungary (15%). The majority of respondents who disagree with Ukraine's accession to the EU when it is ready are in Luxembourg (38%), Greece (37%), Hungary (36%), Austria and Bulgaria (35% each), and also in Cyprus and Slovakia (both 34%). However, on May 10, 2022, the Ambassador of Hungary to Ukraine, Istvan Iidarto, stated that Hungary does not plan to block the process of Ukraine's accession to NATO and the European Union. He stressed that Budapest will support Ukraine's membership in the EU when this issue is considered.

According to the poll, most Europeans believe that since the beginning of the war, the EU has shown solidarity (79%) and was united (63%) and quick (58%) in its response to the Russian Federation's aggression against Ukraine. Respondents, in particular, spoke in support of Ukraine and its people. Therefore, more than nine out of ten respondents (93%) approve of providing humanitarian aid to Ukrainians affected by the war. 88% of European citizens support the idea of welcoming people fleeing the war to the EU, and 80% approve of the financial support provided to Ukraine. In general, 71% of respondents in the EU believe that Ukraine is part of the European family, and 89% feel sympathy for Ukrainians.

It is worth noting that while European citizens are ready to see Ukraine as part of the European family, the Russian Federation is actively spreading false information that Europeans "do not want to see Ukraine in the European Union." Based on several comments from readers of the Austrian newspaper Heute, Russia spreads news under the headlines that "Heute readers do not want to see Ukraine as part of the European Union" or "Austrians supported the Foreign Minister's words about Ukraine's EU membership." However, the Center for Countering Disinformation at the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine notes that such comments from readers are not representative to describe the views of the whole of Austria or Europe.

As everyone already knows, at such a tragic and difficult time for our country, Ukraine is going through the stages of joining the European Union. Let us remind that on April 18, 2022, President Volodymyr Zelenskyi handed over a completed questionnaire to the head of the European Union Delegation to Ukraine, Matti Maasikas, in order to obtain Ukraine's candidate status for EU membership. Today, May 10, 2022, Ukraine submitted to the European Union the second part of the answers to the special questionnaire to obtain the status of a candidate for EU membership. President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi said that Ukraine expects to receive the status of a candidate for EU membership in June at a meeting of EU leaders.
