Ukraine is out and Georgia has written history: how the group stage of Euro 2024 ended and what to expect from the play-offs
The group round of Euro 2024 has ended in Germany. 16 teams reached the final stage. Unfortunately, the Ukrainian national team did not make it there. Find out which countries will fight for a ticket to the finals and who was the real surprise of the tournament
On Wednesday, 26 June, the group stage of the European Football Championship ended in Germany. The Ukrainian national team became the first team in history to take fourth place with 4 points and drop out of the tournament. We tell you how the group stage went, which team was a surprise and what awaits us in the final round.
Ukraine left the Euros after playing on a par with Belgium
The last match of the Ukrainian team took place in Stuttgart. Rebrov's team met the Belgian national team. In order to move on, the Yellow and Blues needed to get three points. However, the miracle did not happen and the teams played to a goalless draw, although at some points the Ukrainians were close to scoring. And in general, the Ukrainian national team looked exactly like a team that is fighting to move on.
Rebrov's men played aggressive and even football against Belgium, which was considered the favourite in Group E. The match went well for the Ukrainians, despite the absence of key players such as Mykhailo Mudryk and Viktor Tsygankov.
However, the losing match against Romania was fatal for the Blue and Yellows, and the team was eliminated from the Euros only on the basis of goals conceded.
Georgia reaches the play-offs for the first time in history
This year, the Georgian team participated in the European Championship for the first time in its history. It is not surprising that the Georgians managed to get this far, as the team now has perhaps the strongest squad in its football history.
In the key match that also decided Georgia's fate at the Euros, the team managed to beat not just anyone, but the 2016 European champions Portugal with a score of 2-0.
