There are many reasons why Ukrainians may need a document recovery service abroad, including the loss or theft of a driver's licence and car registration certificate. What to do if you lose these documents in the Czech Republic and whether it is possible to restore them without leaving the country is described in the article below.

How to restore a driving licence in the Czech Republic?

If your driving licence is lost or stolen, you should immediately contact the local law enforcement authorities. By filing an appropriate application with the police, the service will record confirmation of the loss of the licence, which will help in the subsequent restoration of the document. It will also protect you from possible fraud if the document was stolen for malicious purposes.

You can also contact the embassy or consulate of Ukraine in the Czech Republic. Specialists will be able to guide you in the further necessary actions.

To restore a driving licence in the Czech Republic, you need to apply to the subdivision of the state enterprise Document located in Prague.

● Address: Michelská 1552/58, Prague 4.

● Opening hours: Monday - Saturday, 09:00 - 18:00.

To restore a lost driving licence in the Czech Republic, you will need the following documents:

● Passport of a citizen of Ukraine. Keep in mind that the passport must contain the place of residence, so if you have a passport of a new format (ID-card), you must also bring an extract from the registration of your place of residence or a foreign passport;
● identification number;

● in case of recent changes in personal data, you should also bring a document confirming this.

After that, the employees of the state unit "Document" will create a corresponding application, which will be reviewed by the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine. Once the application is approved, a new document will be issued.

How to restore a car registration certificate in the Czech Republic?

Unfortunately, it is currently impossible to restore a lost technical passport for a car in the Czech Republic. However, there are several options that can solve the problem of a lost or stolen vehicle registration certificate. To do this, you need to contact a service centre of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine to obtain an extract from the Unified State Register of Vehicle Registration. There are two ways to do this:

● Go to Ukraine and apply to a service centre of the Ministry of Internal Affairs to obtain an extract of the car registration. Keep in mind that you cannot use your car in the absence of the registration certificate. After that, you need to translate and notarise this document and bring it back to the Czech Republic.

● Draw up a power of attorney for a person who will apply to the service centre of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine for an extract instead of you. To do this, visit a consulate or a notary and draw up a power of attorney for a person (with a translation into Ukrainian) who will be able to apply to the service centre of the Ministry of the Interior to obtain an extract. Once the authorised person receives the extract, it can be sent by post.

Failure to have a driver's licence and vehicle registration certificate is punishable by fines. Remember that in addition to these documents, you need to have a valid Green Card insurance policy to drive your car legally in the Czech Republic. The Green Card is a mandatory international motor third party liability insurance policy that covers the costs of compensation for damage to life, health and property of third parties caused by an accident in the Czech Republic and other member states of the international Green Card agreement.

It is better to buy insurance online because it is quick and easy. On the Visit Ukraine portal, you can take out a Green Card policy from a licensed insurer. Packages are available for different periods from 15 days to 1 year for cars and trucks, trailers and semi-trailers for trucks, as well as motorcycles and scooters.

Please note! For those Ukrainians who have travelled abroad in their own cars due to the war, it is advisable to research the laws and regulations of the country in which they are currently staying.
