How to transfer money from abroad to Ukraine: the most popular payment systems

Currently, there are several ways to transfer funds to Ukraine from abroad. These include transfers using the IBAN number, international transfer systems, and card-to-card transfers. Find out which payment systems are the most common among Ukrainians abroad and the procedure for transferring funds in each of them

Today, there are millions of Ukrainians abroad who send money to Ukraine. The globalisation of the service sector has led to the development of payment systems around the world.

The National Bank of Ukraine has not imposed any restrictions on transfers from abroad. The ban applies exclusively to transfers related to the Russian Federation and Belarus, as well as transfers in Russian and Belarusian rubles.


How can I transfer funds from abroad to Ukraine?


There are several ways to make a money transfer (you can do it through the mobile application or by contacting your bank's branch abroad)

- via international money transfer systems;

- from card to card (if you use Visa or Mastercard);

- via SWIFT using your IBAN number.

It is recommended to use the transfer method that is most convenient and available at your bank.


What do I need to make a card-to-card transfer?


In order to transfer funds to a card, you must know the card number and the recipient's full name in Latin (full name in English).


What do I need to make a transfer via SWIFT using my IBAN number?


To make a transfer via SWIFT, the sender must provide the following information

- name of the recipient's bank;

- SWIFT code of the recipient's bank;

- recipient's account number or international account number - IBAN;

- name (for a legal entity), surname and name (for an individual) and address of the recipient;

- purpose of the payment;

- details of the correspondent bank (if necessary).


Just a reminder. A correspondent bank is a bank that opens a correspondent account with another bank on the basis of an agreement to service its customers.

What international money transfer systems can I use to transfer funds to Ukraine?


Information on international money transfer systems operating in Ukraine (and their participants) and included in the NBU Register can be found on the NBU website.


WESTERN UNION


The procedure for making a transfer


1. Go to the Western Union website and select the country you are in;

2. Register in the system;

3. Find the ‘Send money’ button on the main page;

4. Choose a country among the recipient countries

5. Select the amount to be sent

6. Choose the method of payment for the commission

7. Select the method of receiving the funds by the person to whom you are sending them (cash, bank account or debit or credit card);

8. Send the money.

Through the Western Union system, you can receive payments from charitable organisations such as The Jewish Foundation for the Righteous, The World Food Programme, Hungarian Interchurch Aid, UNHCR, etc. The following Ukrainian banks currently cooperate with the Western Union payment system: PrivatBank, Ukrgasbank, Oschadbank.


MONEYGRAM


The payment system allows you to make transfers from the US and Europe, with customer service points in more than 200 countries.


The procedure for making a transfer


1. Prepare an identity card and a taxpayer registration number.

2. Apply to any branch of the bank.

3. Fill out a transfer form, indicating the amount, country and full name of the recipient in English.

4. Pay the money to the bank's cash desk.

5. Pay the fee for the transfer.

6. Inform the recipient of your name, the amount of the transfer and the control number assigned to the transfer.

RIAS


The RIA global network in more than 160 countries collects donations for the Ukrainian initiative Save the Children, as well as for humanitarian aid coordinated by the Ministry of Social Policy of Ukraine.


The procedure for making a transfer


1. Go to the RIA website and register.

2. Specify the recipient country and the amount of the transfer.

3. Choose a payment method and a method of receiving money in Ukraine.

4. Read the commission and click the ‘Start’ button.

The procedure for making a transfer


1. Download the TransferGo app and register in it.

2. Enter the recipient's details.

3. Choose a method of transferring funds.

4. Confirm the transaction.

What are the rules for receiving transfers from abroad?


Transfers made through money transfer systems without opening an account may be received without restrictions, but may be received subject to the capabilities of the bank or non-bank financial institution.

If transfers are received to a bank account, an individual may withdraw the equivalent of UAH 100,000 per day.

International money transfer systems that send transfers to Ukraine do not operate in Russia and Belarus.

INTELEXPRESS, MONEYGRAM, MEEST, RIA, SIGUE MONEY TRANSFER, and WESTERN UNION have sent official notices of termination of their services in Russia and Belarus.


At the same time, the NBU recommends using non-cash payments in order not to create an unnecessary burden on banks and not to endanger the collectors and themselves.
