The European Union has ordered airports to bring back restrictions on liquids on aeroplanes. The rules are due to come into effect in the near future. Find out what rules will now apply and why this move has provoked negative reactions from countries
The European Union has reintroduced restrictions for passengers who intend to carry liquids in their hand luggage.
So, from 1 September 2024 passengers in European countries will need to carry in hand luggage no more than 100 ml of liquids, including aerosol and gel cans, writes Schengen.news.
How did the airports react?
This news was commented on in a press release by Airports Council International (ACI) Europe, which noted that the new measure will affect both passengers and airports.
ACI Europe has called on the European Commission and EU Member States to develop a roadmap with specific targets for this measure, which they believe is temporary.

What is the paradox?
The European Commission had previously agreed a lifting on the restriction of liquids. The condition for airports was to install C3 scanners, which help check passengers' belongings. Having these scanners allowed passengers to carry liquids without restriction, as well as storing them with electronic devices such as laptops.
Some airports in Europe heeded the demands of EU authorities and purchased the scanners, but now even their presence cannot affect the restrictions.
ACI expects the new restriction to result in a significant operational burden and impact the passenger experience and airports that have adopted the technology. For example, it can cost nearly eight times more to purchase C3 scanners than conventional machines. Their maintenance costs are also four times higher. Airports that were the first to adopt this new technology are incurring significant operational and financial losses.
