In Germany, able-bodied Ukrainians receive payments to maintain their standard of living on a par with German citizens. But the amount of payments can be reduced for certain violations. We tell with reference to ukrainianingermany.de, for what reason the aid can be reduced.

Why payments are reduced in Germany

Ukrainians living in Germany are now entitled to receive social benefits similar to those received by German citizens with incomes below the subsistence minimum. This assistance, known as Bürgergeld (‘civilian income’), is provided through the Jobcenter.

In order to receive fixed payments, certain conditions must be met. Breaking these rules can lead to a reduction in payments. For example, if a person refuses to attend integration courses, accept job offers or participate in employment seminars, their payments may be reduced by:

- 10% for 1 month for a first offence;

- 20% for 2 months for a second offence;

- 30% for 3 months for a third offence.

In addition, if a person fails to attend an appointment at the employment centre at the appointed time without a valid reason, the assistance may be reduced by 10% each month. Sanctions in total cannot exceed 30%.

Also, payments can be reduced by 30 per cent if a person quits his or her job without a valid reason.

At the same time, the social service can demand a full refund of the money paid if the person provides false information about his or her assets. A fine may also be issued for this. And deliberate concealment of information can be considered fraud on a large scale and punishable by imprisonment for 5 years.
