As of the end of July, just over 4 million Ukrainians who had been granted temporary protection status lived in the European Union. Germany remains the most popular country among Ukrainians, although the country has lost more than 200,000 people who have been granted this status over the past month.

Where are the largest number of refugees from Ukraine?

The list of countries that have received the largest number of Ukrainian refugees as of the end of July 2024 is as follows:

Germany - 1,110,600 people;

Poland - 976,205 people;

Czech Republic - 369,610 people.

According to EU statistics, these three countries have received more than half of the Ukrainian refugees living in the EU.

The number of Ukrainians in Poland has increased

Compared to the end of June 2024, the largest absolute increase in the number of refugees from Ukraine was observed in Poland - 10,430 people arrived there. Meanwhile, more than 8,000 Ukrainians went to the Czech Republic. Half as many Ukrainian citizens settled in Romania over the month - 4,250 people.

A slight increase in the number of Ukrainian citizens was also recorded in Luxembourg and France.

Germany is losing Ukrainian refugees

Starting in July 2024, Germany excluded from the registered contingent of persons under temporary protection all people whose temporary protection status was no longer valid. Such citizens were granted a different protection status.

However, some Ukrainians left Germany altogether.

Over the past month, the number of Ukrainian refugees in this country has significantly decreased. According to EU estimates, the number of people with temporary protection status in Germany has decreased by 17.6% since the end of June, to more than 236,000 people.

What are the rules for Ukrainian refugees in these countries?

Poland

Since 1 July, new rules in the law on assistance to Ukrainian refugees have been in force in this country. According to the new provisions, the status of temporary protection for Ukrainian refugees was extended until 30 September 2025. In addition, access to healthcare services, family and social benefits from ZUS (a social insurance institution) was expanded.

Poland also adopted a number of other equally important changes for Ukrainians.

Germany

Germany continues to accept Ukrainian refugees, helping them to build their lives in this European country. 

Ukrainians can enter Germany without a visa. However, they are allowed to stay in the country without registration for up to 90 days, after which they must apply for temporary protection status.

Czech Republic

As you know, back in 2023, the Czech Republic adopted amendments to the Lex Ukraine law, which extends temporary protection for Ukrainian citizens until 2025.

In order to extend the status, Ukrainians need to register on the website of the Czech Ministry of the Interior, where they will need to indicate their place of residence in the Czech Republic and the name and address of the school where the child is studying, if the child is required to attend school. Once the registration is completed, your protection will be extended until 30 September this year.

By the way, the Czech Republic grants asylum to refugees who have already enjoyed protection in other European countries.
