Money for going home: Ireland to offer refugees payments for returning to Ukraine
EU countries are considering options to encourage Ukrainians to return home after the expiration of temporary protection. In particular, the Irish government plans to support refugees financially. Find out more about the options for encouraging Ukrainians in the country
The Irish authorities are considering providing financial assistance to Ukrainians to encourage them to return home after the end of temporary protection. This is reported by irishexaminer.com.
According to the document of the Ministry of Justice, presented at the Committee of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine, EU countries should consider a number of strategies to complete temporary protection. Temporary protection was granted to Ukrainians until March 2024, but extension is possible until March 2025.
How does Ireland plan to encourage Ukrainians to return home?
One option is to encourage voluntary return, including continued support for a certain period of time to ensure the safety of those returning.
Another option is to grant residence permits to those who work or study, as well as to those who cannot return to Ukraine for health or humanitarian reasons.
As you know, Ukrainians in Ireland can currently receive unemployment benefits, and people over 66 years of age can receive additional social assistance.
How many refugees from Ukraine are in Ireland and do not plan to return?
In particular, a recent survey conducted by Ukrainian Action in Ireland showed that 41% of respondents decided to stay in Ireland permanently, 32% were unsure of their plans, and 24% intend to return to Ukraine as soon as possible.
The EU Commission has stated that it will engage in discussions with all countries on how best to end temporary protection and support a return program for Ukrainians, especially in the context of a potentially protracted war in eastern Ukraine.
For many Ukrainians in Ireland, returning home can be difficult for a variety of reasons, including economic and personal circumstances. However, assistance from the Irish government could make return more affordable and attractive for those who wish to return home.
Overall, the discussions on ending temporary protection for Ukrainians in the EU and supporting the return program are important as they relate to the safety and well-being of Ukrainian migrants who left their country in search of better living conditions.
