Ukrainians who have found refuge in Ireland will be able to obtain a permanent residence permit in the country. This is reported by the Irish Independent.
It is noted that a separate bill will be prepared for this purpose.
Ukrainians can get a residence permit in Ireland: details
More than 30,000 Ukrainian citizens have the opportunity to obtain a permanent residence permit in Ireland if they have a stable job or study in the country.
In addition, tens of thousands may receive social assistance to return to Ukraine under plans being considered by the government.
However, the ministers warn that granting residence permits to Ukrainians working in Ireland could lead to the joining of their families, which could put an additional strain on the refugee accommodation system.
What solution does the Irish government propose?
Plans for the future of the approximately 75,000 Ukrainians in Ireland were discussed at a meeting of the Cabinet Committee.
Officials familiarized themselves with the data of a survey conducted by Ukrainian Action Ireland, which states that
- 41% of Ukrainian refugees currently under temporary protection have decided to stay (just over 30,000 people);
- about 24% (about 18,000 people) intend to return home;
- about a third (about 24,000 people) are not sure of their plans.
Granting residence permits to Ukrainians who have "permanent employment or education" while encouraging "voluntary return, including support for a period of time to ensure the safety of those returning" were identified as options to be further explored.
However, any decisions will depend on whether the European Union extends the Temporary Protection Directive. At the same time, the extension of the directive, which grants Ukrainians the right to live, work, social security and education in Ireland and the EU, until March 2025, is considered a "real possibility."

In particular, in order to facilitate the adaptation of Ukrainians, government officials have drawn up a separate document. The document contains:
- regulate the issuance of documents;
- encourage Ukrainians to return home;
- prioritize the search for housing for those who have been left homeless.
"We want to bring our support and the proposals we have in line with other European countries so that they are roughly the same", - the Irish government said.
