Ukrainians in the Czech Republic who want to stay in the country for longer are facing harsh conditions

Ukrainian refugees in the Czech Republic will apparently have to fulfil a number of conditions in order to stay in the country for a longer period of time. For this purpose, the authorities want to launch a special system. Find out exactly what they are talking about and at what stage the potential innovations are at

Since the outbreak of full-scale war in Ukraine, several hundred thousand Ukrainians have moved to the Czech Republic, where they were granted temporary protection for a specific period. However, two years later, a large number of refugees are considering staying in the Czech Republic for a longer period than their status allows. In response, the local authorities want to create stricter conditions for migrants who plan to stay in the country.

As you know, the status of temporary protection in the Czech Republic can be extended until 2025. This must be done by 15 March.

What rules do they want to introduce for Ukrainians in the Czech Republic?

According to Seznam Zprávy, the Ministry of the Interior of the country reported that a system is currently being developed to determine which refugees will be able to stay in the Czech Republic for longer. One of the criteria will be the level of social self-sufficiency.

As it turned out, the so-called social self-sufficiency conceals several harsh conditions. Thus, applicants for long-term stay:

1. must not receive humanitarian aid in the Czech Republic;

2. must have secure housing and employment;

3. have sufficient income to live on;

4. must not have been convicted.

This system will soon be presented to a government working group that develops plans for the adaptation and integration of refugees.

At the same time, government officials dealing with refugees in the country do not agree with such conditions, as such a system needs to be accompanied by a mechanism that will allow citizens who have been denied long-term residence to appeal this decision.

How many Ukrainians are in the Czech Republic and do they want to go home?

It is noted that, according to the latest data, more than 386,000 people with temporary protection were registered in the Czech Republic.

We wrote that, according to polls, as many as 58% (about 180,000) of Ukrainians living in the Czech Republic do not plan to return to their homeland in the next two years.

Moreover, the level of integration of Ukrainians in the Czech Republic is improving. For example, the number of those who have improved their knowledge of the Czech language has increased, with children showing particularly positive results.

It is worth noting that refugees looking for work and housing in the Czech Republic face significant challenges related to their origin. According to the survey, 29% of refugees have experienced verbal attacks because of their nationality, which indicates a problem of intolerance in society.

Remember. When planning a trip abroad, it is important to take out an appropriate insurance policy in advance. We recommend that you pay attention to health insurance, which, if necessary, can cover maintenance/treatment/diagnosis, etc. as well as injuries and accidents. Such insurance will allow you to be as protected as possible from any unforeseen situations. You can apply for an insurance policy on our portal by following this link.

We remind you!  The extension of temporary protection in the Czech Republic opens up the possibility for Ukrainians to travel and leave the country. It should be borne in mind that the absence of a new visa sticker may restrict border crossings. Read here whether Ukrainians are allowed to leave the Czech Republic before receiving a new visa.
