Rishi Sunak will soon become the Prime Minister of Great Britain, because his only competitor, Penny Mordont, the Leader of the House of Commons of the British Parliament, has withdrawn her candidacy. What will Sunak's appointment mean for Ukraine and will his policies change support for our country?

The most important tasks for the prime minister

The newly elected leader of the conservative party will stabilize the economy of Britain after a month and a half of premiership of Liz Truss. In foreign policy, he will concentrate on supporting Ukraine in the war with Russia.

Rishi Sunak has previously stated that he is running for the position of prime minister in order to resolve the "deep economic crisis" and also to unite his party. Thanks to specialized education, Sunak understands how to solve the Kingdom's financial problems, and that this is now England's problem #1.

What do we know about Rishi Sunak?

Rishi Sunak is one of the youngest players on the British political scene, at just 42 years old. He is also considered to be one of the richest parliamentarians, although he has never commented on his wealth.

In February 2020, he became the Minister of Finance. Sunak resigned in July 2022, citing a different approach to the economy than that of then-Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

Due to his Indian origin, the politician has been compared to Benjamin Disraeli, a prominent British politician of the 19th century. After all, both are not British by origin.

Will Britain continue to support Ukraine?

Sunak publicly expressed his position on the war in Ukraine several times. In the summer, during the race for the prime minister's seat, he told The Sun that neither President Zelensky nor Ukrainians should doubt that the United Kingdom will continue to be a reliable ally. In addition, Rishi Sunak wrote on his Twitter that he will visit Kyiv when he becomes the prime minister.

Also, the future head of the government of the United Kingdom publicly supported Boris Johnson's foreign policy course in relation to Ukraine.

"If I become prime minister, I will redouble my efforts and strengthen our policy of total support for Ukraine, which was so skillfully carried out by Boris", - the politician said.

Sunak is not the kind of leader who was elected by the British and who will be able to conduct politics at his own discretion. This means that all components of British policy towards Ukraine will continue: military and financial aid, condemnation of the Russian Federation, calls to President Zelensky, and others.
