Ukrainians in Austria can stay in the country on the basis of temporary protection. The country's government continued its operation. Find out in more detail how long refugees from Ukraine can legally stay in Austria now
Ukrainians in Austria are based on the status of temporary protection. In October, against the backdrop of massive missile attacks on Ukraine, the European Commission extended the Temporary Protection Directive, which was approved on March 11, 2022.
On December 21, the Federal Government made a similar decision in the Council of Ministers of Austria. From now on, Ukrainians can legally stay in the country until March 2024. The identity cards on the basis of which the refugees live in Austria will be valid until the end of the specified period.
"The competent authority for issuing ID cards for displaced persons is the Federal Office of Immigration and Asylum. The ID cards for displaced persons have now been reissued with a validity period until March 2024," the government said in a statement.
How many Ukrainian refugees are there in Austria?
Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, more than 90,000 Ukrainians have received temporary protection in Austria. About 56,000 displaced people are currently receiving basic support within the framework of temporary protection (free accommodation, financial and humanitarian aid). At the same time, more than 67,000 people are registered in the central register.
Also, since October, the Austrian authorities have been providing one-time financial assistance to Ukrainians. In November, a new Arrivals Center was opened in Vienna, located at Althanstraße 14, opposite the Althanstraße tram stop.
