Since the beginning of the full-scale war, almost 4 million Ukrainians have been granted temporary protection in the European Union. Today, most refugees are returning home.

We will tell you in which EU countries Ukrainians are more likely to refuse protection.

Ukrainian refugees in the EU: the current situation

According to SchengenVisaInfo.com, the number of refugees in Poland, Estonia, Portugal and France has decreased significantly.

The largest decrease was recorded in Poland and Portugal.

According to Eurostat, since February 24, 2022, Germany has granted protection status to 28% of Ukrainians in total, which is more than 1 million people. Poland has granted protection status to 995,035 people, which is 25% of the total.  The Czech Republic accepted 331,850 Ukrainians, which is 8%.

It is noted that some countries, such as Germany, Sweden and the Czech Republic, have noted a slight increase in the number of refugees.

According to Eurostat, "the increase in Sweden is mainly due to the delay in the renewal of temporary protection status, which ended in March 2023. This led to the fact that the number of registered beneficiaries of temporary protection at the end of March seemed lower than it actually was."

At the same time, in some countries, the number of Ukrainians with temporary protection has decreased.

The largest decrease was recorded in Poland, where the number decreased by 4,700 people, as well as in Portugal (decrease by 2,520 people), Estonia (decrease by 1,885 people) and France (decrease by 985 people).

How many Ukrainian refugees are currently residing in EU countries?

As of April 2023, Ukrainian citizens accounted for 98% of the total number of persons granted temporary protection in the EU.

In particular, they are mostly women aged 35 to 64 (48%) and children (35%).  Men accounted for less than a fifth of the total number of refugees, namely 18%.

As you know, initially Poland was the leader in accepting refugees, but now Germany is in the lead. More than a million people have benefited from temporary protection status in Germany, while in Poland these numbers have dropped to 989,080.
