Ukrainians continue to return home despite enemy shelling. In order to make your arrival home stress-free and without fuss with documents, you should settle all your affairs in the country where you lived in advance. Here's what you need to do before coming to Ukraine.

Give up your temporary protection status

No matter what country you lived in, the most important step is to give up your temporary protection status. Your status will be canceled by the state body or institution where you applied for it. We would like to add that Ukrainians can re-acquire this status if they return abroad. Read more about the renewal of temporary protection here.

Make sure your documents are valid

Citizens who left Ukraine with a valid passport will not face any difficulties. An expired document can be extended at diplomatic missions for another five years - this decision was made by the Cabinet of Ministers, as it is not possible to issue biometrics abroad. You can also add a child's data to an adult passport.

Those who have only an internal passport or have left Ukraine without documents should also contact an embassy or consulate. Employees of the institution will issue a special document - an identity card for returning to Ukraine. Please note that you do not need to pay a consular fee during martial law.

Cancel the receipt of financial assistance abroad

Upon returning home, refugees cannot receive state benefits. If you do not notify the relevant institution of your departure from the country, it will be considered an offense. In this case, a Ukrainian may face a fine and even a ban on entering the country. By the way, there is no need to declare monetary payments received abroad in Ukraine.

The approach to providing financial assistance is the same as with temporary protection - it can be received upon re-entry into the country.

Solve all tax issues

In some countries, temporary migrants have to pay taxes if they live in the country for more than six months. It is difficult to solve tax problems from Ukraine, so we recommend paying all taxes before crossing the border.

Ukrainians who have officially worked abroad must obtain a certificate of taxation and taxable income. The Ukrainian embassy or consular office can legalize this document.

Close your bank account

This step is optional. However, we recommend that you close your accounts if you do not plan to use financial services. The bank may charge a fee for using the account, and if you do not pay it, you will accumulate a debt.

Banks offer various options for closing an account, including remote ones. So if you didn't have time to do it from abroad, you can close your account at home.

Notify the educational institution of your child's return

If your child is officially enrolled in a Ukrainian school, you don't need to do anything. Of course, you should notify the class teacher and choose the format of education (full-time, distance, or family) if you have a choice.

If your school is closed or destroyed, you should choose a new school and submit the necessary documents.

Parents who have withdrawn their documents from the school need to write a new application to resume their studies. It must be accompanied by a certificate of attendance at a foreign school, which certifies the level of knowledge required for promotion to the next grade.

We remind you! A record number of people entering Ukraine is being recorded at the Ukrainian borders. Ukrainians are traveling to visit relatives, and the number of foreign travelers has also increased. Earlier, we talked about the rules for entering Ukraine and how Ukrainians can avoid losing protection in Europe by temporarily returning to Ukraine.

In this article, we're going to talk about the main restrictions that should be taken into account when traveling to Ukraine.
