Millions of Ukrainian refugees are forcing foreign countries to adapt their legislation to their needs. Authorities are making new changes to the rules because of the demands of Ukrainians.

We will tell you what is changing in the laws of foreigners and how refugees from Ukraine protect their rights and needs.

In Switzerland, Ukrainians filed a lawsuit over payments

In some regions of the country, financial assistance is two times lower than in others. In particular, this situation affected the canton of Lucerne. Refugees were outraged by the low social payments and filed a lawsuit against the local authorities.

Urban Fry, a politician, is covering the expenses of 39 refugees who managed to find a lawyer and sued because of the minimum payments from the cantonal authorities, which are categorically insufficient for living.

The authorities allocate 1500 francs of financial assistance, 550 of which are allocated at a flat rate for social benefits, the lawyer calculated. However, Ukrainians in the canton of Lucerne (if they live in cantonal housing) receive only 350 "social" francs.

Earlier it was noted that a family of three should receive 1070 francs of financial support. This is 200 francs less than refugees receive in Zurich and 500 francs less than in Basel.

The cantonal authorities refuse to comment on the proceedings in any way, but say that they are currently reviewing their approach to financial support for Ukrainian refugees.

The United States granted free access to work

In November 2022, refugees from Ukraine residing in the United States finally received the opportunity to not pay for a work permit. Previously, thousands of people had to spend $410 each without this permit.

In May 2022, lawyers appealed to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services to change the policy and make work permits for Ukrainian refugees free; in September 2022, lawyers filed a lawsuit on behalf of Ukrainians, claiming that they were being denied work permits for non-payment.

Under US law, refugees are not required to obtain work permits. However, if they do wish to obtain one, they receive it free of charge.

In Germany, refugees' cars are inspected in a simplified manner

More than a million Ukrainians have found refuge in Germany. This country is still the first in the ranking by the number of refugees from Ukraine who have been granted temporary protection and continue to stay in the country.

That's right, many Ukrainians have been in Germany for more than a year. And according to the rules, they had to re-register their cars to get German license plates.

At the same time, the transport ministries of the German federal states have agreed to allow the vehicles of Ukrainian refugees who have been in the country for a long time to be inspected. The inspections will be conducted under a simplified procedure.

Previously, obtaining a certificate of compliance with EU technical standards was a big problem for Ukrainians and could cost several hundred euros. Today, compliance with the technical requirements applied in Germany and the EU is not checked. Ukrainian cars are checked for safety for road users and compliance with emission standards.

In Britain, rules for drivers are changing because of Ukrainians

The UK government is simplifying driving rules for Ukrainian refugees. Ukrainians will no longer have to spend thousands of pounds on headlights and other modifications.

The Ministry of Transport has announced that refugees will be allowed to modify their headlights, for example, to put a sticker on them that says "low beam".

Due to the inability of refugees to afford the necessary modifications, Caroline Nokes, MP for Romsey North Southampton, wrote to the government.

"Additional costs and difficulties should not be a deterrent. It's hard enough to just leave your home and flee to safety, I'm glad the government has stepped in and changed the conditions," she said.

Take care of your own safety abroad

In addition to the cost of accommodation and food, Ukrainians can face many unexpected situations. Each country has its own nuances that can also add to the difficulties of staying in another country.

Therefore, an important thing to take care of in advance is travel insurance. In every country, monetary expenses can be unpredictable. For foreigners, an ambulance call or a visit to the doctor can be particularly expensive.

In order to ensure a calm stay outside of Ukraine and not to worry about yourself and your loved ones, you need to take out health insurance in advance.

We remind you! Checking your passport before traveling is a critical step that you should pay attention to, in particular, its validity and the correctness of the data provided. Read here to learn how to avoid troubles and ensure a successful border crossing.
