Irish authorities will leave Ukrainians who go home for Christmas homeless: details

The Irish media reported that the Department of Integration has reduced the period for which Ukrainians have the right to leave their homes in Ireland from seven days to zero. The reason for this decision is the critical lack of affordable housing for refugees in the country.

This change in domestic and international travel policy is marked as the first step in a series of measures aimed at reducing Ireland's attractiveness to refugees seeking asylum from the war in Ukraine.

However, the Department of Integration is considering granting exemptions for Ukrainian refugees who plan to travel home or to other locations within the country over Christmas. Details on the duration of these exemptions should be clarified for refugees in the next two weeks.

The Executive Director of the Irish Refugee Council, Nick Henderson, indicated that it is impossible to guarantee Ukrainian refugees that housing will remain available for a long period of time.

How does Ireland solve the problem with the influx of Ukrainian refugees to the country?

Ireland is now actively using all possible means to resettle newly arrived refugees, but, on the other hand, Ukrainians need to be able to visit Ukraine to resolve personal matters, including maintaining contact with family, transporting personal belongings and resolving issues with documents.

The Irish point out that leaving the country is possible in exceptional circumstances, such as medical treatment or a family situation in Ukraine.

However, refugees must inform the Department in advance of their plans and free up accommodation for others who may need it. Upon their return, they are encouraged to apply for new accommodation if available, although this will not necessarily be in the same location.

How many Ukrainians are there in Ireland?

It is important to note that in October of this year, almost 100 thousand temporary protection documents for Ukrainians were issued in Ireland, and almost 72 thousand refugees were provided with housing.

Every day, approximately 100 Ukrainians arrive in the country seeking asylum in Ireland, and this leads to an extreme shortage of housing.

Earlier, we wrote that Ireland is considering reducing the support program for Ukrainians who have taken refuge in the country since the beginning of the full-scale invasion. In particular, they are considering limiting free accommodation and cutting social benefits. Read more about the changes in this article.
