Certain new traffic rules will come into effect in Ukraine from the first days of May. Learn more about what updates will come into effect and what drivers should keep in mind
Starting from May 1, a new provision to the Traffic Rules of Ukraine will come into force, regulating the use of daytime running lights and other lighting devices on vehicles outside of settlements.
These changes were introduced by the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine last fall, abolishing the time limit for this requirement, which previously applied from October 1 to May 1. Now it applies all the time, regardless of the time of year or time of day.
Driving rules 2024: what drivers should know about the changes in traffic rules from May 1
According to the updated rules, all vehicles driving outside of settlements must have daytime running lights or low beam headlights on. This applies to both cars and motorcycles.
In the absence of daytime running lights, drivers are obliged to turn on their dipped headlights.
Additionally, in conditions of limited visibility, it is allowed to use high beam headlights or fog lights, provided that this does not lead to blinding other road users.
These changes are aimed at improving road safety, as daytime running lights improve the visibility of vehicles to other road users.
According to the European Research Institute for Road Safety, the use of daytime running lights can reduce the number of road accidents during daylight hours by 10-15%.

What else should drivers pay attention to?
It is also important to note that drivers should replace winter tires with summer tires as soon as possible. This is because winter tires lose their effectiveness on dry asphalt, which can lead to an increase in stopping distance.
According to research, the stopping distance on winter tires increases by 30% compared to summer models. Therefore, to ensure maximum safety on the road, it is recommended to change cars to summer tires in time before the onset of the warm season.
