Read this article to find out how the Ukrainian energy sector survived the second winter under russian attacks.

Consequences of the attack on the night of May 8: what facilities were hit by russia?

In total, according to the Ukrainian Air Force, the enemy used 55 missiles of various types and 21 UAVs. They managed to shoot down 39 missiles and 20 UAVs, but they did not reach their targets. The consequences of the hits in some regions were reported by local military organizations. Among the victims: two people in Kyiv region and one child in Kirovohrad region.

In addition, according to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, about 30 residential buildings, public transport, garage cooperatives, and cars were damaged. In Zaporizhzhia, the building of the fire and rescue unit was also damaged, and the railway station in Kherson was attacked.

According to Energy Minister Herman Galushchenko, the russians targeted energy facilities in six regions of Ukraine.

"Electricity generation and transmission facilities in Poltava, Kirovohrad, Zaporizhzhia, Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk, and Vinnytsia regions were attacked," he wrote, adding that power engineers are already working to eliminate them.

Ukrenergo also added that this is the fifth massive attack on the energy sector since March 22. This time, heat and hydroelectric power plants were damaged, but they did not specify which ones.

Given the significant damage to the power system, Ukrainians are urged to limit electricity consumption.

Will there be blackouts today, May 8?

The press services of the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine and NPC Ukrenergo have warned of possible power outages for household and industrial consumers across Ukraine. It is noted that the restrictions will be evenly distributed across all regions.

"A particularly difficult situation is expected today from 18:00 to 23:00. Ukrenergo's dispatch center is taking all available measures to overcome the deficit, including imports and emergency electricity from the power systems of European countries," the statement said.

However, there are no blackout schedules yet: "How exactly the blackout schedules will work in each region will be published on the official pages of local regional power distribution companies," the press service warned.

The Ministry of Energy also emphasized that limiting electricity consumption during peak hours would reduce the load on the system.

Martial law in Ukraine: until when has it been extended?

Today, on May 8, the Verkhovna Rada supported the presidential decrees extending general mobilization and martial law for another 90 days. Thus, martial law and general mobilization have been extended until at least August 11, 2024. Since the beginning of russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, this is the eleventh such extension of the martial law.

We remind you! Ukrainian intelligence has learned about russia's plan to destabilize Ukraine. The enemy is planning to influence the situation using three different directions. Read what exactly russia is targeting and what other plans are known to the intelligence community in our previous article.
