A new programme to help parents will be introduced in Poland from 1 October. The allowance is called "Active Parent", but the media have already nicknamed it babciowe. We tell you who, how much and for what the state will pay.

Parents can expect to receive three benefits aimed at supporting their professional activities, as well as the upbringing and development of a young child: "Active Parents at Work", "Active Participation in Kindergarten" and "Active Time at Home".

To apply for the allowance, you need to sign an agreement with the family member who will take care of the child.

Who is eligible for the babciowe allowance?

The money will be paid, in particular, to families in which both parents are employed and intend to use the services of, for example, a nanny or a close relative. Such families will receive PLN 1500 per month.

Families who have sent their children to a kindergarten (nursery) can also count on the benefit. However, for the time being, they will receive PLN 400 per month.

At the same time, one of the parents who stays at home with the child will be able to receive PLN 500.

What are the conditions of the Active Parent programme?

The term "Active Parent" includes full-time employment, contract work, economic and agricultural activities.

It should also be noted that any relative who agrees to take care of the child can also become a recipient of the allowance.

In order for a mother to receive the benefit, after the birth of her child, she must take up a permanent job or return to her previous job, and earn an income not lower than the national minimum wage, which will be PLN 4,242 gross as of 1 January 2024.

If a parent on maternity leave wants to return to work earlier, he or she may also be eligible for benefits.

Please note that the payments are only valid if your child is no older than 36 months.

Will Ukrainians be able to receive assistance?

In general, foreigners can receive money under this programme, but they need to have a residence card with access to the labour market and meet the above criteria. They must also be eligible for the 800+ allowance.

As for Ukrainians, there is currently no exact information on whether this programme will be available to them.

We remind you! Citizens of Ukraine who arrived in Poland after the start of the full-scale invasion should apply for PESEL UKR status. However, more and more Ukrainians are facing the cancellation of this status. Read here to find out who can lose their PESEL UKR status and for what reasons.
