Amid the war in Ukraine, the procedure for registering a marriage for military personnel has been simplified. The new mechanism allows for marriage without the personal presence of the bride or groom. This was reported by the Southern Interregional Department of the Ministry of Justice.

How to get married remotely?

A serviceman needs to submit an application to his commander. The application must contain the following information about yourself and the bride (groom):

• Surname, name and patronymic (if any);

• Date of birth;

• Citizenship;

• In case of change of surname - information about the chosen surname.

This application also serves as a confirmation of the serviceman's consent to the marriage.

The procedure for submitting an application

The commander certifies the authenticity of the signature on the application and sends it to the department of the State Civil Registration Office (DRACS), where the groom (bride) has filed an application for marriage registration. 

The application may also be sent to another department of the Civil Registry Office or to a territorial body of the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine that operates during martial law.

Civil registry offices or territorial bodies of the Ministry of Justice ensure that such documents are sent to the relevant civil registry offices by electronic means of telecommunications. The originals of marriage registration applications or acts are immediately transferred to the relevant registry offices.

Who can use the simplified marriage registration procedure?

The simplified procedure is available for:

• Members of the Armed Forces of Ukraine;

• Employees of the State Border Guard Service, the State Protection Department and other military formations established in accordance with the laws of Ukraine;

• Employees of the National Guard, the Security Service and the Foreign Intelligence Service;

• Police officers;

• Privates and senior officers of the Civil Defense Service, the State Bureau of Investigation, and the State Criminal Executive Service;

• Senior officers of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau and the Bureau of Economic Security;

• Employees of healthcare institutions.

This innovation greatly simplifies the marriage registration process for those who serve on the front line or work in high-risk environments, allowing them to maintain family ties even in the most difficult times.
