How many Ukrainians in Slovakia receive housing compensation?
The number of Ukrainians receiving housing compensation in Slovakia has significantly decreased. Find out how the rules for payments have changed and which Ukrainian refugees can apply for assistance after the innovations from July 2024
In Slovakia, since July 2024, there have been significant changes in the system of housing compensation for Ukrainian refugees. According to the new rules, homeowners can receive payments for accommodating Ukrainians only during the first 120 days after granting temporary protection. The exception is made only for vulnerable categories of the population.
We have described in detail the rules for entry, stay and obtaining temporary protection in Slovakia in 2024 in a previous article.
How has the number of recipients of housing compensation changed?
The change in the rules has led to a sharp decline in the number of Ukrainians receiving housing compensation in Slovakia. According to novyny.sme.sk, citing a statement by Matej Neumann, a spokesperson for the Slovak Ministry of the Interior, in July 2024, payments for the accommodation of Ukrainian refugees amounted to 1.2 million euros, which is significantly less than almost 5 million euros in June of the same year. During this period, the number of IDPs for whom homeowners received compensation decreased from more than 33,000 in June to just over 8,000 in July.
The number of homeowners who were eligible for compensation also decreased significantly. In June, more than 10,000 people received assistance, and in July this number dropped to 3,440. Despite this, the number of Ukrainian refugees arriving in Slovakia continues to grow. In July 2024 alone, almost 3,000 new applications for temporary protection status were registered, which is more than in June.

New rules for housing benefits for Ukrainians in Slovakia
Starting from July 1, 2024, housing compensation for Ukrainians will be paid only during the first 120 days after obtaining temporary protection. After that, the assistance is available only to vulnerable categories such as children under 5 years old, persons taking care of children, people with disabilities and people over 65 years old.
The amount of compensation remained unchanged: 5 euros per person per night of accommodation in apartments or family-type houses. The maximum amount of compensation depends on the number of rooms in the housing:
- 1-room housing - 390 euros;
- 2-room housing - 540 euros;
- 3-room housing - 720 euros;
- 4 or more rooms - 900 euros.
In other accommodation facilities that are not intended for business activities, 6 euros per night per person is compensated.
It should be noted that the rules for registering for temporary protection have also changed in Slovakia. We described the changes in detail earlier.
However, despite the new restrictions, the flow of Ukrainian refugees to Slovakia is not decreasing. At the same time, changes in the rules for providing housing compensation have significantly reduced the number of people receiving such assistance.
