Compulsory motor third party liability insurance in Moldova
The most common type of such insurance is MTPL (compulsory motor third party liability insurance). This is a type of insurance that covers damage caused to the health and property of third parties in the event of a road traffic accident. An MTPL policy in Moldova is completely identical to a Ukrainian car insurance policy.
The cost of an MTPL policy depends on various factors, such as the make and model of the car, engine size, driving experience and the region of registration of the car.
The limits of payments under the Moldovan MTPL policy determine the maximum amount that the insurance company is obliged to pay to the victim in the event of a road traffic accident. These limits are set by law and may be changed from time to time. Currently, the following limits are in force in the country: 1,000,000 lei for damage to or destruction of property, regardless of the number of people injured in the accident, and 1,000,000 lei for each person whose health was damaged (but not more than 5,000,000 lei).
The absence of a motor third party liability insurance policy for cars with Moldovan registration is subject to administrative liability in the form of a fine of 1,300 to 1,500 lei.
CASCO insurance in Moldova
CASCO in Moldova is a voluntary car insurance policy that provides much wider protection for your car than the compulsory motor third party liability insurance. While CTPCI covers damage caused to third parties, CASCO protects your car from various risks.
The price of a CASCO policy in Moldova is formed taking into account many factors. Each insurance company may have its own system for calculating the cost, but in general, the price depends on the following criteria: car make and model, year of manufacture, car value, engine size, equipment, etc.
Do Ukrainians need to take out local car insurance in Moldova?
Obtaining CTPCI is mandatory for Ukrainians who have re-registered their cars and received Moldovan licence plates or purchased a new car in Moldova.
However, drivers who continue to drive legally on Moldovan roads in cars with Ukrainian licence plates are not required to obtain local motor third party liability insurance.
In turn, drivers of such cars are required to have a valid Green Card insurance policy.
Green Card to Moldova
If you have ever driven your own car out of Ukraine, you know that this policy is mandatory for crossing the border. However, it is also valid in Moldova. The main thing is to keep track of the policy's validity and renew it in time.
If you have a valid Green Card insurance policy, you do not need to take out additional Moldovan insurance. Remember that the Green Card is valid not only in Moldova and Ukraine, but also in Europe, North Africa and the Middle East, so you will be under reliable insurance protection even when travelling to other countries.
How to buy a Green Card online?
You can buy a Green Card for a car with Ukrainian registration both abroad and in Ukraine. However, insurance abroad will cost much more.
Therefore, it is better to buy insurance online, as it is quick and easy. On the Visit Ukraine portal, you can take out a Green Card policy from a licensed insurer.
