Today, on October 1, Ukraine celebrates two important holidays at once - the Day of Defenders of Ukraine and the Day of Ukrainian Cossacks. Both of these holidays have deep roots in the history and culture of our country, symbolizing the courage, strength and dedication of the people in the struggle for freedom and independence.

Read more about these important holidays for Ukrainians today in the article.

Day of Defenders: the history of the holiday

In Ukraine, the Day of Defenders was officially introduced in 2014, when the country was going through the most difficult period in its modern history due to Russian aggression. Initially, the holiday was called “Day of the Defender of Ukraine,” but in 2021 it was renamed “Day of Defenders of Ukraine” to emphasize the role of not only men but also women in defending the Motherland.

The choice of the date, October 1, is related to the celebration of the Intercession of the Holy Virgin, which was celebrated by the Cossacks in the days of Kievan Rus and became a symbol of protection for soldiers and the people.

The Virgin Mary has long been considered the patroness of the Ukrainian Cossacks, and therefore this day also marks the Day of the Ukrainian Cossacks, which honors Cossack valor, heritage and traditions that have become one of the foundations of Ukraine's statehood.

The importance of the holiday

The Day of Defenders of Ukraine is not just a day of remembrance and honor for the military. It is a holiday for all those who guard the country's independence and sovereignty on a daily basis: military personnel, volunteers, medics, and volunteers. A modern Ukrainian defender is not only a person with military ammunition, but also everyone who contributes to the fight for the future of the state.

The significance of this holiday has grown especially since the events of 2014, when the war in Donbas and the illegal annexation of Crimea began. Ukraine's defenders have become a symbol of strength, steadfastness and unity of the nation.

Women in the army have also begun to play an important role, and so the decision to celebrate the Day of Defenders was an important step in recognizing their contribution.

Along with the celebration of the defenders, we cannot ignore the Day of the Ukrainian Cossacks. Cossacks have always been considered a symbol of freedom and national pride. They have been fighting for the rights, freedom and autonomy of the Ukrainian people for centuries, being the ancestors of modern soldiers who are now defending the country. It is on these historical figures that our traditions of fighting for independence are based.

Modernity in today's conditions

Nowadays, the Day of Defenders of Ukraine is celebrated with special honor in the context of a full-scale war against the Russian Federation. Every day this day reminds us of the heroism of soldiers, volunteers and all those who stand in defense of Ukrainian lands.

The celebration of this holiday is important not only for the military but also for the entire society, as it reminds us of the common values for which our defenders are fighting.

Cities host celebrations, laying flowers at monuments to soldiers, concerts, and charity events to support the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Day of the Ukrainian Cossacks

The Day of the Ukrainian Cossacks remains important for the formation of national identity and preservation of historical memory. Today, Cossack traditions live on in many military units that have inherited the spirit of a free and unconquered Ukraine.

Both of these holidays are a recognition of the strength of the Ukrainian spirit, courage and readiness of every Ukrainian to defend their country. It is not only about the past, but also about the present and future of an independent Ukraine.

Let us continue to honor the memory of our defenders and move into a brighter future! Glory to Ukraine!
