Currently, there are about 90,000 Ukrainian refugees in Austria, most of whom are women with children. If the situation in Ukraine deteriorates, Austria is ready to accept a new wave of refugees. This was stated by the Ambassador of Austria to Ukraine Arad Benkö in a commentary for Suspilne.

Ukrainian refugees in Austria: hospitality and integration

According to the ambassador, the integration of Ukrainians into Austrian society is quite successful due to the high motivation of Ukrainians. People are eager to learn German and integrate into the local labor market. Although most of the refugees are women with children, which creates certain difficulties, Austria remains open and ready to provide assistance to those who need it.

"Integrating and accepting Ukrainian refugees is not a problem, because Ukrainians are very eager to learn the language. They are happy to integrate into the market. If there is a new wave, the Austrians have a big heart and will welcome Ukrainians,” Benkö noted.

Conditions of stay of Ukrainian refugees in Austria

Ukrainians who arrived in Austria because of the war are granted temporary protection under the EU Temporary Protection Directive. The main conditions of stay include:

• The right of residence: Refugees receive a temporary residence permit, which is automatically extended until March 2025.

• Access to the labor market: Ukrainians are allowed to work without the need for additional permits.

• Education for children: Children have the right to attend schools, including special language courses.

• Medical care: Refugees have access to medical services within the state healthcare system.

• Financial support: Benefits for housing and basic needs are available through local social services.

Possibility of moving to Austria after temporary protection in other countries

Ukrainians who have already been granted temporary protection in another EU country can move to Austria, but they will need to re-register for temporary protection status. This rule is based on a European directive that allows for movement within the EU. However, it is important to keep in mind that financial assistance and access to certain services will depend on the new country of residence.

Austria remains one of the most open European countries for Ukrainian refugees, confirming its readiness to provide assistance in the event of a new wave of migrants.
