The Swiss parliament is discussing the introduction of restrictions on the issuance of S status for Ukrainian refugees. In the future, it is proposed to grant this status to a limited number of people. We will tell you who exactly.

How do they want to change the rules for granting S status?

In the future, it is proposed to grant this status only to those who leave the parts of Ukraine occupied or attacked by Russian troops.

On Monday, 2 December, the House of Representatives in Switzerland partially approved the Senate's proposal. This clause of the multi-party initiative, submitted by Senator Ester Friedli, was supported by 96 votes to 87, with five abstentions.

According to the proposal, when granting S status, it is necessary to take into account which part of Ukraine a person came from. Protection is proposed to be granted only to those who have lived in war zones or in territories fully or partially occupied by Russia. Refugees who have left regions under Ukrainian control where there is no active hostilities will not be able to obtain this status.

The initiative was opposed by a small majority of the House of Representatives' relevant committee, and Swiss Justice Minister Bit Jans called for its rejection. At the same time, the proposal does not apply to the granting of S permits to non-Ukrainians.
