HELP

Russian troops are putting pressure on the Ukrainians as much as they can. So, since October 10, they have been launching massive missile strikes on the country's energy infrastructure. As a result, the electricity supply is cut off and there are problems with mobile communication and the Internet. We talk about the current situation, forecasts for the future and advise what to do.

Mobile operators warn of possible communication interruptions throughout Ukraine

As reported by the Kyivstar and Vodafone companies, the massive missile attack on the objects of our energy infrastructure on November 15 led to large-scale power outages and problems in the work of mobile operators.

In particular, the president of the mobile operator "Kyivstar" Oleksandr Komarov assumes that mobile communication on Ukrainian territory will work in the mode of spot coverage. That is, it is planned to create "islands" where everything will be fine with communication and territories where there will be no communication at all. Such a situation can currently be observed in Kyiv. But this does not mean that there is no connection.

As the company emphasizes, the ratio of working and non-working sites is the same as in the entire territory of Ukraine. According to Komarov, Kyiv, Poltava, Kharkiv and Lviv regions are currently the most vulnerable.

In particular, the company Vodafone Ukraine informs that due to shelling and lack of power, interruptions in the provision of services are also possible in the future.

Why does the mobile connection disappear after turning off the lights?

The operation of base stations requires constant power supply. When the central power supply fails, backup batteries are automatically switched on.

As the operators explain, they can provide work for 4-5 hours. This would be quite enough in peacetime, but now such capacities are not enough. In case of repeated disconnection, the batteries do not have time to recharge.

In addition, when the lights and home Wi-Fi go out, users massively switch to mobile Internet, which leads to a drop in speed.

What to do during communication interruptions?

We have prepared useful tips for you, following which you can significantly limit the load on your mobile operator's network and speed up the normalization of communication in your city. Therefore, it is necessary:

• Limit the use of mobile data transmission service;

• Do not watch videos on Youtube or reduce its quality to a minimum;

• Turn off auto-download of files from messengers. This will help extend the battery life of base stations.

In addition, when your mobile network disappears, use national roaming. To do this, disable the auto network selection function on your smartphone and select the desired operator manually.

Learn more about what national roaming is and how it works on the territory of Ukraine in our material at the link.
