Ukrainians will be able to marry or divorce abroad: what is needed for this
Diplomatic institutions of Ukraine located in other countries will now be able to use the State Register of Civil Status Acts. Learn more about what it takes to get married or divorced abroad
During the full-scale war in Ukraine, about 170,000 people got married, which is almost 25% more than in the previous year. At the same time, during 2022, more than 60,000 couples divorced. From now on, Ukrainians who were forced to go abroad will have the opportunity to get married or divorced right at their place of stay.
How to get married or divorced abroad?
Foreign diplomatic institutions of Ukraine will now be able to use the State Register of Civil Status Acts. This will give them the opportunity to carry out state registration of acts of civil status, make changes to act records, renew and cancel it.
Also, foreign diplomatic institutions will be able to re-issue state registration certificates and extracts from the Register. Documents will be issued regardless of the storage location of the paper medium.
Thus, access to services in the field of state registration of civil status acts will be simplified for Ukrainians abroad and the terms of obtaining them at foreign diplomatic institutions of Ukraine will be shortened.
Foreign diplomatic institutions that will be able to use the State Register will be determined and announced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs later.
When will it be possible to get married or divorced abroad?
The adopted decision will enter into force already at the beginning of February, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will determine the foreign diplomatic institutions that will provide services in the field of state registration of civil status acts using the Register.
