Inhaltsübersicht
Italy has extended temporary protection for refugees from Ukraine. Find out more about how Ukrainians can maintain their temporary protection status in the country for another year
The Italian government has decided to extend temporary protection for Ukrainians until December 31, 2023. The country has also extended a number of measures established for Ukrainian citizens. We will describe them in more detail below.
Thus, the validity of a residence permit under temporary protection issued to Ukrainian citizens who arrived in Italy after the outbreak of a full-scale war has been automatically extended until December 31 this year.
In addition to the extension of the residence permit, the Italian government also extended a number of existing assistance and reception measures in favor of the Ukrainian population.
In particular, these include:
- a large-scale reception carried out through municipalities, third sector bodies, volunteer service centers, bodies and associations registered in the register already provided for by the Consolidated Immigration Law, and religious organizations recognized as citizens
- per diem to assist persons entitled to temporary protection who have found accommodation on their own;
- social services offered by municipalities hosting a significant number of temporary protection beneficiaries, for which a fixed contribution of an additional EUR 40,000,000 is envisaged for 2023 to strengthen the service offer.
Please note! The official decree on the automatic extension of temporary protection in Italy (permeso) is now available in five languages.
That is, the official directive has been published, which you can, if necessary, present at the border, taking into account the language of the country. Choose your language and download the document here.
What rights can IDPs in Italy count on?
Medical care
All temporary migrants can count on medical care within the national territory of Italy. These measures have been extended until June 30, 2023, when the Ministry of Health and the regions will verify the costs actually incurred by the medical system.
Social support
Refugees are entitled to payments from the Italian government. The financial assistance is 300 euros per month for each family member for up to 3 months.
Parents of children under the age of 18 are entitled to an additional payment of 150 euros per month for each child. In order to receive this funding, applicants must reside in separate housing (not in public housing) for at least ten days a month.
In addition, we have previously told you that Ukrainians in Italy can apply for a one-time financial assistance of 150 euros. More details can be found here.
Employment and other services
Ukrainians in Italy can count on employment within the framework of the rules that apply to residents of this country.
Also, immigrants can use the services of language learning, career guidance and education projects.
We will remind you! Italy allows refugees from Ukraine to be officially employed. However, as elsewhere, unscrupulous employers can be found in the country. How to protect your rights as an employee and where to go if they are violated, read our article.
