The NBU has launched the fourth version of its Electronic Payment System (EPS). It is now based on the international standard ISO 20022. Find out more about what this means
The National Bank of Ukraine has launched the fourth version of its Electronic Payment System (EPS), thereby abolishing the concept of a "banking day". Here's what will change and how it will affect interbank transfers.
In order to understand the essence of the changes, it is necessary to understand what a "banking day" is. A banking (operational) day is a certain period of time during the day when a bank conducts all kinds of banking operations.
What has changed?
The NBU system now operates on the basis of the international standard ISO 20022 and is available for interbank payments 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. That is, interbank transfers (from account to account) are made around the clock and seven days a week.
"Such changes happen once in a generation. I am confident that this will be a powerful impetus for the future development and modernization of information systems of Ukrainian banks and financial institutions", - said Oleksiy Shaban, Deputy Governor of the National Bank.
The new generation of EPS is built using modern software and hardware, which makes electronic payments even faster, more convenient, and safer.
From now on, the system operates in 24/7 mode, which provides for round-the-clock execution of interbank payment transactions without suspending the system and instant transition from the current to the next calendar day.
The NBU also noted that, given that Ukraine has become a candidate for EU membership, the regulator continues to work on the possibility of Ukraine's accession to the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA).
We remind you! In October last year, the National Bank of Ukraine introduced a ban on P2P transfers from hryvnia payment cards of Ukrainian banks to cards of foreign financial institutions. We told you more about this here.
