Ukrainian citizens living in the Netherlands often face the need to return to their homeland. Foreigners also travel to Ukraine, and the Ukrainian border remains open for them.

However, due to the war and the closure of the skies over the country, some of them may face the problem of choosing a route and restrictions on transfer. In this regard, we have selected the most convenient routes for traveling to Ukraine, which we describe below.

Read more about visa rules and obtaining a visa to Ukraine for citizens of the Netherlands here.

How do I get from the Netherlands to Ukraine?

Given the lack of air travel, the number of possible means of transportation to get to Ukraine is decreasing. Thus, there are currently several ways to get to the country:

- a flight to a neighboring country and a subsequent transfer by bus or train;

- a bus trip;

- personal transportation.

Plane with a transfer to a bus or train

By plane you can get to the nearest country that is a neighbor of Ukraine (Moldova, Poland, Romania, Hungary).

There are direct flights from the Netherlands to all of the above countries. Ticket prices, if you plan your trip in advance, are as follows:

• from the Netherlands (Eindhoven) to Poland (Warsaw, Krakow, Wroclaw, Gdansk) - from 22 to 29 euros, depending on the carrier (Ryanair, Wizz Air);

• from the Netherlands (Eindhoven) to Romania (Suceava) - from 16 to 17 euros (Wizz Air);

• from the Netherlands (Eindhoven) to Hungary (Debrecen) - from 22 to 45 euros (Wizz Air);

• from the Netherlands (Amsterdam) to Moldova (Chisinau) - from 150 euros and above.

Please note! If you plan to buy tickets in the near future, the prices may be much higher.

You can easily get to Ukraine from neighboring countries (Moldova, Poland, Romania, Hungary) by bus or train. For example, FlixBuss operates bus services from Poland to Lutsk, Rivne, Zhytomyr, Kyiv, Lviv, and other Ukrainian cities. From Suceava (Romania), it is easy to get to Chernivtsi; a bus runs daily from the bus station and takes 2-3 hours to get to Chernivtsi.

In addition, Ukrzaliznytsia continues to actively develop international connections with Europe. For more information about the railway connection between Ukraine and neighboring countries, please follow the link.

Traveling by bus

The average duration of a bus trip from the Netherlands to Ukraine is 35 hours. Buses mostly depart from cities: Amsterdam and Eindhoven and arrive in Lviv, Kyiv and Odesa. The cost of such a trip will be from 5200 to 7500 hryvnias (130-187 euros).

You can also get to Ukraine with transfers. Such a trip takes an average of 35 hours and costs from 88 to 140 euros.

Personal transportation

If you have a car or rented one, you can certainly get to Ukraine from the Netherlands. However, it should be borne in mind that the distance between the countries is about 2000 km, which, on average, can be covered in 20 hours.

Such a trip, taking into account gasoline prices, can cost from 15,000 to 21,000 hryvnias.

How to avoid losing temporary protection in the Netherlands when traveling to Ukraine?

Ukrainians who do not receive social assistance in the Netherlands, including housing and financial support, have the right to leave the country and return without re-registration during the entire period of temporary protection. The date of expiration of protection is indicated on a sticker that is pasted into the Ukrainian passport.

At the same time, the departure of refugees receiving social assistance cannot exceed 28 days. If you are absent for more than 28 days, the municipality may terminate your assistance. You can learn more about this in our material.
