Since February 24, 2022, about 8.6 million Ukrainians have left the country and are not going to return home at least until the end of the war.  As a result, the population of Ukraine has shrunk significantly. Let's find out what the current population is in Ukraine.

Read here how many people are returning to Ukraine and why they are not satisfied with life in other countries.

What is the current population in Ukraine?

According to the Ukrainian Institute for the Future, as of the beginning of May 2023, the resident population amounted to 29 million people. Only a third of them are employed.

"Only 9.1-9.5 million Ukrainians are employed, and if you deduct state employees, there are about 6-7 million people left. These people are a "burden" that carries others - 22-23 million people, including pensioners, children, students, the unemployed, dependent persons and public sector employees", - the report says.

In addition, experts note that the birth rate is currently low.  The Ukrainian Institute for the Future reports that the fertility rate has already fallen below 1, while it should be above 2 for population growth.

According to the Ukrainian Institute for the Future, at this rate, in a few years the number of pensioners in Ukraine will be twice as high as the number of working people.

How has the war in Ukraine affected the country's economy?

The consequences of the full-scale war with russia are significantly felt both in the demographic situation and in the economic situation of Ukrainians.

According to the World Bank, in early May, about 7 million Ukrainians were living below the poverty line, and the most serious consequences of impoverishment are observed in rural areas.

According to the United Nations Population Fund, as of 2023, 36.7 million people lived in Ukraine, of whom more than 20% were over 65 years old, and another 15.2% were children under 14. According to the UN, the total fertility rate was 2.19, which is already considered one of the lowest rates in recent years.
