According to data at the beginning of this year, about 12 million people have left Ukraine since the start of full-scale war. Some of them have not yet decided to return home, but most plan to do so after the end of hostilities. We tell you how many people are returning home and why they are not satisfied with their life abroad.

Note that the total number who went abroad includes not only refugees, but also citizens who travel to neighboring countries on personal matters and business trips. These people are likely to have already returned or are planning to do so soon.

However, as for the category of refugees, among them the percentage of those who want to stay abroad is constantly changing depending on several factors - language skills, integration and standard of living.

How many Ukrainians are returning home?

According to data as of last September, about 5 million citizens who left for the EU countries after the war began returned to Ukraine.

It is safe to say that today this figure has increased. Against the backdrop of the Easter holidays, a significant number of citizens returned to the country, but after the holidays most of them are likely to go back.

Is the number of refugees planning to return decreasing?

If we take data from Poland, where the vast majority of Ukrainians moved after the war began, the mood of Ukrainian citizens regarding returning home has changed.

According to a survey by the international company Gremi Personal, almost half of Ukrainians want to stay abroad.

The results of the survey show that 38% of Ukrainian refugees will stay in Poland, 7% - are planning to move from Poland to another country.

At the same time 55% of respondents want to return to Ukraine. Of these, 82% are planning to return after the victory. 8% of respondents are going home this spring, 6% more are planning to come back in summer and 4% - in autumn.

What do Ukrainians who want to go back are not satisfied with living abroad?

According to the official data, last year about 4 million Ukrainians received temporary asylum in the European Union. At the same time, more than 1 million refugees are already employed throughout the European Economic Area.

Considering the statistics of the official EU bodies, we can conclude that few Ukrainians have managed to find work abroad. Most of those who have left probably live in Europe at the expense of the benefits provided to them by their host countries.

This is a very important factor for comfortable living where Ukrainian citizens moved to after the war began, because in some European countries the benefits do not quite match the social needs.

That is, the main problem for Ukrainians abroad is the standard of living. In most cases it is this factor that makes Ukrainian citizens return home.

In addition, one should not discard factors that are related to family circumstances and commitment to the homeland.
