Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, the Czech authorities have provided shelter to more than 500,000 Ukrainians. Many of them have returned home or chosen another country to live in. Today, 346 thousand Ukrainian citizens continue to stay in the country.

Refusal of temporary protection

If you plan to leave the Czech Republic permanently, you can refuse temporary protection. However, you do not have to do this when returning to Ukraine.

If your temporary protection visa remains unexpired, you will be able to return to the Czech Republic without any obstacles if you need protection again. The duration of your stay in Ukraine is not limited. However, lawyers recommend sticking to a period of up to 90 days.

You can withdraw from temporary protection with a biometric passport at the Regional Center for Assistance to Ukraine or without a biometric passport at the Department of Asylum and Migration Policy of the Ministry of the Interior. 

If you are on the territory of Ukraine, you can withdraw your application at the Czech Embassy in Kyiv or at the Consulate General of the Czech Republic in Lviv.

Closing bank accounts

Most Ukrainians in the Czech Republic have opened bank accounts to receive government benefits or salaries.

Before leaving, you should make sure that there are no funds left on your accounts. 

We recommend obtaining an account statement with a summary report so that you have a document with the date of the application.

Payment of debts and termination of state insurance

Before leaving the country, it is important to notify the insurance company by contacting them at their branch, by e-mail or using an online form.

Starting from the day after you leave for Ukraine, your public health insurance will be terminated due to your prolonged stay in Ukraine, namely until you return to the Czech Republic and register with the VZP of the Czech Republic. 

During this period, the obligation to pay insurance premiums ceases, and there is no right to receive reimbursement for medical services from the state health insurance funds, as indicated on the website of the VZP insurance company.

It is recommended to clarify whether there is a debt to the insurance company, as penalties and fines may be charged.

Obtain a certificate from your employer confirming your employment

A temporary residence visa allows you to enter the Czech labor market. With a temporary residence permit, you can find a job in the Czech Republic on your own with any employer who is looking for new employees.

If you terminate your employment relationship with your employer, it is important to formalize this fact and take a document from your place of work that will confirm the official nature of your work abroad.

The agreement between Ukraine and the Czech Republic on social security is based on the proportional principle, according to which each party to the agreement appoints and pays a pension in accordance with the insurance (employment) period acquired in its territory.

In addition, a tax return must be filed if the person worked or was engaged in entrepreneurial activity. It is important to inform the tax manager of any change of address.

Collect documents from the educational institution and the certificate of education

If your child has attended school in the Czech Republic, you need to obtain a document confirming their education. It is recommended to do this for further recognition of education in Ukraine or any other country.

The form of the certificate of education can be downloaded from edu.cz.

It is also necessary to return school property and settle any financial obligations, for example, for lost textbooks or meals.

Settle all the obligations you have assumed while renting a home

If you have had experience renting a home, it is important to resolve all issues with the owner, check whether the terms of the lease agreement have been fully met and whether there are any outstanding debts.

If you have any debts or any unfulfilled obligations, the owner may go to court to recover compensation. Such problems can be resolved more quickly when you are in the Czech Republic, but it can become much more difficult from another country.

In addition, such problems can affect your comfort of stay and visa issues in other European countries.

This also applies to utility arrears. When renting social housing or rented housing, you must comply with all the conditions specified in the contract.

Settle payments with a Czech mobile operator

Remember if you have any unpaid bills or active SIM cards on your and your children's phones, which can be an unpleasant surprise later.

Make sure you have all the basic documents you received during your stay in the Czech Republic

If you have undergone medical examinations or received important medical reports and certificates, or if you have received certificates, diplomas, or other documents during your studies, do not forget to have them completed and brought with you.

It is difficult to predict what documents you may need in the future, for example, when looking for a job or when your children are enrolled in educational institutions.
