London's mayor's office claims that only one in ten cars driving around the city's outskirts meets the established environmental standards. According to their estimates, more than 690 thousand cars potentially affect the air quality in the city and the health of its residents.

We will tell you how the city authorities are solving the problem, what prices are set for entering London, and what caused the innovations for drivers of old vehicles.

New law on old cars in London: ULEZ details

Old cars will now be charged for entering London. London Mayor Sadiq Khan has expanded Ultra Low Emission Zones (ULEZs) to all 32 boroughs of the city.

From now on, drivers of vehicles that do not meet the requirements must pay $15.7 to enter the zone. The fine for non-payment is $229.

The decision is expected to help meet air quality targets 184 years earlier than experts had predicted.

"This is a landmark event for our city that will lead to a greener and healthier London for everyone. The decision to introduce it across London was a difficult one, but it was necessary to save lives and prevent health problems," the mayor emphasized.

The decision is expected to achieve the air quality targets 184 years earlier than experts predicted.

Impact of old cars on the environment

Emissions of carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides and other harmful substances from cars pose a direct threat to the health of residents of the city's central districts, where the concentration of traffic is the highest.

According to the Mayor's Office, one in ten cars on London's roads does not meet the requirements. According to their information, this is more than 690,000 cars.

Who can be sanctioned?

The tolls were introduced for diesel cars and vans (usually purchased new before 2015) that do not meet Euro 6 standards, and for gasoline cars and vans (purchased before 2006) that do not meet Euro 4 or higher standards.

ULEZs were first introduced in central London congestion charge zones in 2019 and were first extended in October 2021.

However, the expansion of the zones caused controversy and protests from some residents. Only one of the seven local authorities bordering London has agreed to install road signs warning of the ultra-low emission zone.

What do I need to travel abroad in my own car?

When planning to travel abroad or already being there by your own car, it is important not only to prepare the necessary documents and check the technical condition of the car, but also to take care of insurance, as the Ukrainian policy of compulsory motor third party liability insurance is not valid abroad.

To protect yourself from unforeseen expenses, a car owner should take care of a Green Card policy in advance before traveling.

It's worth remembering that in many countries, a policy is required to enter the country or drive within its territory. To ensure safe traveling by your own car outside Ukraine, take out the necessary insurance by following the link.
