The Ukrainian-Moldovan border has always been one of the busiest sections due to the large-scale flow of people entering and leaving. For example, in the first half of 2023 alone, more than half a million foreigners entered Ukraine from Moldova, and in the pre-war period, the annual figure exceeded one million people. Here's a look at who enters Ukrainian territory in wartime and for what purpose.

In response to a request from Visit Ukraine, the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine said that the total number of foreigners who entered Ukraine from Moldova from January to August 2023 was 573,545.

The vast majority of those entering - 563,239 people - crossed the border for private purposes, and another 10,003 were vehicle service personnel. Also, 303 people entered the territory of Ukraine for transit purposes.

What was the purpose of foreigners entering Ukraine from Moldova in the pre-war period?

In the pre-war period, foreigners who came from Moldova visited Ukraine for various purposes. According to the State Agency for Tourism Development, in 2021, just over 1 million people entered Ukraine from Moldova. However, as it turned out, every second visitor came for one day and did not stay overnight. The main purpose of such foreigners' entry was to purchase goods in the border town of Mohyliv-Podilskyi.

Speaking of travelers, in the prewar period, men came to Ukraine most often. Most of them were entrepreneurs (37%) or employees (32%).
