How to leave Ukraine in someone else's car: what documents are needed?
It is possible to drive abroad in someone else's car, but there is an important nuance. Find out what documents you need to cross the Ukrainian border in someone else's car and how to obtain a vehicle registration certificate for traveling abroad
Driving abroad in someone else's car is not prohibited by law, but certain conditions must be met. In this case, a driver who is not the owner of the car may travel abroad, but must have a slightly wider list of documents than the owner of the car. And for such a trip, he will need to contact the center of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
What car documents are needed to travel abroad in someone else's car?
1. Driver's license
2. Identification mark of Ukraine on the car (UA), if there is no such designation on the license plate of the car
3. Insurance policy "Green Card" for the car for the entire period of stay abroad
5. A certificate of registration of a vehicle for traveling abroad in the name of a driver or passenger who is not the owner of the car (issued by the Ministry of Internal Affairs) or a power of attorney for the right to drive someone else's car abroad (translated into the language of the host country and legalized in accordance with the established procedure).
In addition, the website of the Cabinet of Ministers notes that the car must have a state license plate containing Latin letters (an individual license plate is valid only on the territory of Ukraine).
How do I get a certificate for traveling abroad in someone else's car?
To do this, you and the owner of the car must contact the service center of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and obtain a certificate of registration of the vehicle for traveling abroad. You must have with you:
- passport
- identification code;
- vehicle registration certificate.
Upon returning to Ukraine, the certificate must be returned to the MIA service center within 10 days.

Power of attorney to drive someone else's car abroad: how to do it?
A power of attorney to drive someone else's car will be valid only if the following conditions are met:
- The document has been translated into the language of the country to which the trip is planned (an official translation is required);
- The document has been legalized in accordance with the established procedure (depending on the country of destination, it may be apostilled or consular legalization).
It should be noted that this procedure is more complicated than obtaining a certificate for traveling abroad in someone else's car from the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and therefore is less popular in Ukraine.
Where to buy a Green Card for a car for traveling abroad?
The Green Card insurance policy is mandatory for traveling abroad by car, because without it you simply will not be allowed to pass through checkpoints. The insurance must be issued for the entire period of stay abroad; if the trip requires more time, the Green Card can be extended.
You can take out car insurance for traveling abroad for the required period on the Visit Ukraine website. Read more about what coverage is provided under such an insurance policy here.
We remind you! Winter fines in Poland apply not only to driving rules, but also to warming up the engine and clearing the car of snow. Read more about the current restrictions, as well as how much the amount of fines has increased compared to last year in our previous article.
