In which countries will air and rail flights be canceled in January due to strikes?
January may be a challenge for travelers in some European countries due to a large number of strikes in the transportation industry. Find out more about which countries will be affected by strikes
After a break due to the New Year holidays, a wave of strikes among transport workers is beginning in Europe. Protests at airports and railways are hampering mobility in several countries, according to schengenvisainfo.com.
Where will the strikes take place in January 2024?
Flights are canceled en masse in Germany
On January 10, a long-lasting three-day strike organized by the German Railway Drivers' Union (GDL) began in Germany due to a misunderstanding with Deutsche Bahn over working conditions and wages. Drivers of freight and passenger transport are protesting.
During the strike period from January 10 to 12, Deutsche Bahn canceled about 80% of long-distance trains, but some regional and intercity trains, as well as S-Bahn short-distance trains, will be available.
Passengers are urged to refrain from traveling during this period, and purchased tickets will be valid for future flights after the strike ends.
Earlier we reported that train disruptions on German railways would continue in 2024. Passengers who face canceled trips may receive compensation. Read more about how to get a refund here.
Protests at European airports
Protests will be held at airports in Spain and Italy. Security personnel at Alicante-Elche airport are planning to strike until January 14 with regular breaks at certain times, which may affect security and baggage handling.
In Italy, a nationwide public transport strike is planned for January 24, covering subways, buses and trams. Delays and cancellations of flights are also expected due to the strike of air traffic controllers from 13:00 to 17:00.

Strikes are expected in France
French railroad unions SudRail and CGT des Cheminots, although they refrained from strikes during the Christmas holidays, may resume protests after the holiday season due to disputes over employee pay.
